Michael Moore ill with pneumonia 10/06/04
He was scheduled to hold an event here in Pittsburgh today at Carnegie mellon University, and had to cancel. When I enquired as to the reason at the university, I was told he had become ill with pneumonia. I can't find this news confirmed elsewhere....

Bummer.

Send good thoughts out to Michael today and wish him a speedy recovery.

1. I saw on the local news tonight
that he was cancelling because he is ill. They didn't say with pneumonia, but I would imagine it is true because a lot of people are getting it.

3. WTF? Pneumonia's pretty rare these days........middle aged people hardly
ever are at serious risk for it. If this is true, I'm putting my tinfoil hat back on...

8. People still get pneumonia.
It's just that if it's the bacterial kind, antibiotics knock it out pretty quickly. There are viral ones which would not be affected by antibiotics.

Michael Moore is quite overweight, which means he's at risk for all sorts of things. I do hope he recovers quickly.

I was expecting to see him tomorrow in Kansas City, and just found out that he won't be here.

42. Hello! Me too.
I didn't see your post until I had posted the same thing. I was disappointed, but want him to be well.

It's really hard to explain to others that there really are a lot of us blue people here in this stupid red state. I've seen quite a few people post here that are virtually down the street. That is comforting when it feels like I'm surrounded by apathy and ignorance every time I leave my house.

15. It's awful having to wonder about these things....
I felt sorry for him, having had the disease some years ago and nearly departing the world as a result, but just kinda blamed his very tough schedule -- he's doing the nationwide "Slacker Tour."

Funny -- the two guys I was going to attend with BOTH said, oh oh....

Wouldn't put it past the Bush Crime Family....

16. Everyone in my family has had it
Me, my wife, both my kids. I'm the oldest at 44. It's not rare at all. I was the only one who was on my back with it, the rest had "walking pneumonia," and were able to take mega antibiotics while still carrying on a fairly normal existence (but for the constant coughing).

Problem is, it can get complicated for people who are overweight, diabetic, hypertensive, etc. MM is not in the best of shape. I think we should all send out our prayers and good wishes to him for a quick return to health.

19. You're wrong on that one! I had it last Feb.
I worked 13 years for my last company and NEVER used a sick day. I rarely get sick other than the occasional cold.

Last Jan I got one of those colds. I did the standard Theraflu to dispell the sympthoms and life went on. Then I got a cough, and it just stayed! After about 6 weeks, I decided it just wans't going away by itself, so I went to the Dr. They did an Xray and said it was Pneumonia. Took some meds and it went away in about 10 days, but believe me...it still happens!

26. I got it when I was a young and healthy 23.
And it sucked! 1990 was a bad year for it. Jim Henson died from it, and my grandmother had it at the same time I did.

29. My son just had a bout with Acute Bronchitis . . .
He's had it in years past and we were told it isn't catchy. This time, the doctor told me he was extremely contagious and that I probably had it, too. Unfortunately I don't have medical insurance and although my son's been treated and is feeling better, I have a cough that could kill a horse and I'm miserable. Everyone I know is telling me pneumonia is going around here like a bad cold and that I need to get to a doctor before I get it, if I don't have it already.

My take is that so many are without health insurance, like me, and when they get a cold or bronchitis, etc, they end up with pneumonia because they can't get the treatment they need for the lesser virus. At work, there are 12 people who either have pneumonia or know someone with it. Actually, counting me, probably 13.

38. I had it three years ago
I got pneumonia during Basic Training back in the summer of 2001. It was actually rather fortuitous, as it resulted in my being discharged. (I'd probably be in Iraq right now if not for that pneumonia; how's that for a blessing in disguise?)

common ailment in recruits back when I worked in an army hospital, years ago. It probably still is. Recruits get a lot of pneumonia and a lot of broken bones.

I was going to see him in Kansas City tomorrow. The lady at the bookstore told me it was pneumonia, and he is rescheduling his missed appearances at the end of the month. According to the local news, he hasn't cancelled a Saturday appearance elsewhere in Missouri, so it might not be too bad.

14. about Mikey...
I rented the F911 last night - didn't see it all cuz of flipping back and forth, time constraints, etc., to the Edwards debate.

the Lila addition - Mikey's posture in the background, all hunched and not very 'hollywood' - made me love the man more. He is so real.

20. Check out "The Awful truth"
He had a series on Bravo a few years back that was wonderful. Two seaons of it are on DVD. There may even be some clips from episodes still on his website.

He did a piece on nursing homes, in his inimitable style, that had me crying my eyes out. In a piece in which he confronts the crooked corporation which runs nursing homes in which patients were seriously injured or died from negligence, he sent in a Tai Kwon Do Master from Korea, who he had teach martial arts to the elderly residents to use against those who tried to hurt them.

In another episode, he got a bunch of people who lost their larynyxes to throat cancer, and had then stand outside the offices of Phillip Morris and sing Christmas Carols.

25. yes, it really can be that serious. i learned the hard way
Edited on Wed Oct-06-04 07:43 PM by faithnotgreed
and by talking about it i hope that others can learn the truth of how this can happen, and that its another of those killers that people havent heard enough about, but is out there.

now to have full disclosure, there are different types. there are viral and bacterial pneumonia. bacterial is what is considered most common and "least" harmful but it should all be taken seriously because in this world, everything seems to be potentially fatal. sometimes from the disease itself, and other times because of quality of care and ignorance

27. There's a pneumonia vaccine available
You have to beg your doctor for it if you're not over 65 or have a chronic disease, but if you demand it, you'll get it.

I had pneumonia from the flu once. I was run down for months after.

28. I have had pneumonia twice in my life!
Once when I was 13 years old and at the age of 43.

At 13 I was one of those athletic kids who not slow down for anything. Caught the flu that did not go away for a month thus turning into pneumonia. It took 6 months to get my health back to somewhat normal.

At 43 a co-worker decided to go to China in-spite of the SARS warnings. He came back and got sick a few days latter. A couple of weeks latter I had the same symptoms that my co-worker had. 5 weeks latter after the initial symptoms, I went to the doctor who told me I had the flu and to take it easy and drink plenty of fluids. Not feeling any better after a week, I went back to the doctor. The next day it was declared that I was sick with pneumonia.

After a year and some odd months, I am still not up to full speed. It is a real drag because the world does not slow down for these type of problems. But I am lucky to have medical insurance to deal with this disease and the following complications. A lot of people do not!

31. Get well Mike!
It would be such a great thing to see Mike not only beat this current illness, but to drop 150 pounds or so shortly thereafter. It would drive the wingnuts crazy. It would also deprive them of their standard rejoinder of "....but...but...Michael Moore is fat!!" It would drive them insane to actually have to confront the validity of his facts.

If Moore had the body of a decathlete, would that make his ideas any less relevant and correct?

Uh, no.

Some time out to recuperate might actually assist him in getting a new routine going which is healthier for him.

Hope he's as good as new by November 2nd. Wouldn't be right if he couldn't vote.

Get well soon to Michael Moore, a national treasure.

His right-wingnut detractors would NEVER have the courage to walk against the political wind, as he has. He has courage he hasn't even used yet. God bless him. He's right, they are wrong.

40. Had tickets to see him in K.C. today
We were going to a book signing today and a friend just called to give me the news. His website said he will reschedule.

We have had a lot of cases of pneumonia over the last month here in K.C. One friend had it in late August which seems very strange. I have worked with children for almost 30 years and I've never seem this level of strep and pneumonia so early in the season.

Michael is probably worn out. I sure hope the Democratic Party will step up and give him the recognition he deserves for all his hard work after we have a landslide win!

He could definitely afford to take time off, hire a personal trainer & a low-fat chef & devote 100% of his time to his own health.

But he's out on the road working to get Kerry elected. I hope he does take care, though. He's got more good movies in him. Besides, I like the guy.

46. We have tickets to see him Saturday
I checked my mail and there was nothing about a cancelation, I want tp see him, but, I hope he doesn't run himself into the ground trying to make all his appearances.

If he doesn't cancel Saturday, and people still want to see him, fo to NWMSU website and buy your tickets, they're only five bucks and limited to the first 4000.

If you don't know how to get to to the University, from KC come up 29 north to 71 then it's 30 more miles. When you get to Maryville, turn left at the light, go through town to fourth st. turn left you can't miss it.

He'll be at Bearcat Stadium, if he makes it. If you'de like we can have a DU party at my place after it's over. We're right off the road in Savannah.
