Should the US revert to a confederation?
Edited on Wed Nov-03-04 10:56 AM by independentpiney
I've always thought threads about secession were silly, but between being awake for 2 days and analyzing the apparent results of the past few elections, this is seeming more like a plausible solution to the division in this country.

We are no less divided now over social issues such as abortion and separation of church and state than we were over slavery in 1860. And I believe we have no more chance of reaching a national consensus on these issues than we did on that.

Secession would be impractical imo because the blue states are not contiguous, and would result in at least 3 small countries opposed to one large, militaristic red-land. In a confederation, the states could individually determine these social issues, and individually decide whether to commit troops to military action among other benefits. And the blue states, which generally have higher gdp's than the red states and have a net loss comparing federal tax dollars paid to federal investment recieved could save their money to implement universal health care and other progressive reforms. If South Carolina or North Dakota need infrastructure improvements, let them pray and pay for it themselves, or take out a loan from another state.

I'm sure this sounds nuts, but what's the solution?

1. Interesting idea. I like it.
But, I would prefer a regional confederation of states.
