An evil confluence of interests
Those who look for "The Reason" the US went into Iraq are chasing a chimera. As in the rest of life's big events it's always a combination of factors. Here's my attempt at a succinct analysis, both for the Iraq adventure and the current American situation in general:

- PNAC provides the Manifest Destiny philosophical base
- Halliburton contributes the profit motive, corporatist philosophy and financial muscle
- Dominionists feed the Manifest Destiny theme and provide the motivators for the Evangelical power base
- Peak Oil provides the incentive
- The Bush Family provides the fulcrum of power

At its root we're seeing an ideological movement, but without the economic, social and political enablers PNAC would suffer the same fate other demagogues have experienced - obscurity. They lucked into a perfect storm on 9/11 and have surfed the wave ever since.
