LOCAL MARINE KILLED BY MAN PLAYING DEAD.
GILROY, Calif. -- A 21-year-old Marine from Gilroy was killed in Iraq.

The family of Lance Cpl. Jeramy Ailes was informed about his death Monday night.

"The first thing when he got Fallujah, he had us mail over as many boxes of soccer balls as we could and he blew them up and gave them out to as many kids as he could find. He wasn't there to kill people. He was there to do a job. If that meant killing people he would, but he was there to help the people of iraq and we're very proud of him for that," Ailes father, Joel Ailes, said.

Ailes was on his second tour of duty in Iraq. During his first tour, from February to May 2003, he was based in the Iraqi city of Nasiriyah, where he guarded and patrolled towns on foot.

Ailes graduated from high school in 2001 and was taking college courses when he decided to enlist in the Marines. He learned to read and write in Arabic at Camp Pendleton before he was deployed.

2. Nothing in this link says a word about anyone "playing dead".
What is this, some kind of damage control?

"He made it through the entire offensive and everything was fine," Ailes said, pausing to thank well-wishers leaving his home. "The last morning, when they declared they had 100 percent of Fallujah, they were backtracking looking for insurgents. Someone was playing possum and jumped up and shot him."

16. "playing possum" is very vague
For all we know he jumped out of nowhere and shot him. What were the exact circumstances? Until we know, we can't lay judgement.

10. I am also bewildered.
Headline meant to derail criticism of soldier who murdered wounded Iraqi? Need to see proof on this one. Very sad no matter what.

21. I'm curious, his father gave that detail
Do the parents normally get such a detailed accounting of the circumstances so quickly? Just wondering.

27. Email.
The families of the two men I knew who were killed knew the circumstances almost immediately. Guys in the unit email the families or friends of the family or the guys attached to the unit back stateside or the casualty assistance officer...information superhighway and all.

19. So not the point
There were several marines in that mosque, only a few wounded people. They were milling around the place when the one marine noticed an arm flinch. That's all. The reaction was to shoot him, not disarm him. That's training, lack of discipline, whatever. I don't doubt people are playing dead and killing troops. But this was not a heated war situation. They had an opportunity to do something different, the guy didn't.

20. Kevin Sites,
in his original report, mentioned that just the day before another Marine had been killed by an Iraqi pretending to be dead. Probably this guy.

Two more were killed and five were wounded by a booby-trapped body.

I'm sure everyone, including the Marine in the mosque incident, had been briefed on these deaths.

22. Yes, and Jessica Lynch pulled her weapon and shot billions
of Iraqis, whoops, I mean insurgents or terrorists, before they captured her. (sarcasm)

I pray for the soldier and his family.

I don't believe everything my government, the DOD, releases as fact. Call me a skeptic, call me crazy, but the timing is just too damned convenient.

24. But we need the insurgents to play fair in this war!

Good grief. I can't believe the US armed forces whined the other day about Iraq not being a fair fight. :eyes: Guh. This is war. It ain't fair. It ain't a game. People on both sides are going to be underhanded (doih). And both are going to react to how they think they are being treated.

It works both ways on both sides. Maybe that's why war is supposed to be a thing to be avoided, and not rabidly rushed into via pretenses and lies.

My condolances to the soldier, and to the tens of thousands on BOTH sides who have died for this monstrous mess. But the whole picture needs to be seen too. War is hell. And the US isn't a country of angels that think the world looks up to them with purity.

25. Just a propaganda item trying to lessen the effect of the film
Expect several more of these throw away propaganda stories along with many stories attacking the freelance photographer who shot the film of the marine shooting the Iraqi.

What stories have you seen attacking Kevin Sites?
