I sometimes think there are probably too many cabinets and government bureaucracies. That said, I'm somewhat ignorant of the roles of many of them. It seems to me like a number of them could be abolished or downsized or at least reduced from cabinet level, without actually hurting American policy. A liberal government professor of mine said he thinks the Energy Department is completely wasteful, for instance.
So what departments should be abolished? Or should none be? Should some be merged - besides Homeland Security?
NOTE: PLEASE do not discuss Homeland Security. It's obviously one that a lot of DU'ers dislike. Others (like me) think the idea is alright but the implementation is bad. However, I've seen in other discussions like this, HS comes to dominate the discussion. I want to talk about OTHER departments, so if you could refrain from posting anything on Homeland Security, that would be good. That could be a different thread. I primarily want to focus on other cabinet departments, especially less controversial ones.
