Andrew M. Greeley: Hatred for illegal entrants is a sin

Americans have less concern for the lives of illegal Mexican immigrants than they do for Iraqi civilians - which is none at all.

Both groups somehow do not seem to merit respect as human beings. The parish at which I work in Tucson has a memorial to those immigrants who have died while trying to cross the desert in their search for jobs in the United States - more than 200 last year, more than 700 since the beginning of the decade.

The parish cares, or at least some of its people care. Most Americans couldn't care less. The pollos are paying a price for violating American laws. Serves them right.

Surveys show the majority of Americans are willing to deny them the most fundamental human rights. They should be gathered up and shipped back to where they belong.

"Abortion may be the most serious "life problem," but only those who support a consistent ethic of life have any claim on the label of Catholic - whether with a small "c" or a capital "C."

I am a "fallen" Catholic, but Greeley is one of the few Catholics I will listen to any more. I miss the Mass, but will not go back because I reject my church's political ambitions.
