So if it turns out Gannon/Guckert was planted by the WH
does that mean he wasn't actually a journalist and thus has no reason to protect a source?

In other words, if he's been paid by the White House to throw softball questions, wouldn't that make him a co-conspirator in the Plame affair and subject to full prosecution under the law?

I wonder how fast the SOB would sing if he knew he could be looking at 25 hard years in Leavanworth being Bubba's girlfriend?

3. Wouldn't Bush just pardon him?
The media would sell it as some sort of a heroic thing on Bush's part - protecting the fourth estate or something - rather than CYA, but isn't this something Bush could pull as a last resort?

5. That would end up being an even bigger scandal than the first!
Edited on Wed Feb-09-05 01:53 PM by Walt Starr
No way would he be pardoned, unless he can tie Bush directly to the Plame affair.

12. Wasn't one of the Iran-Contra figures pre-emptively pardoned?
I don't think he's high enough in the scandal to earn it, but isn't this a tactic that has been used before?

16. I don't think so
I think Poppy Bush pardoned them all soon after taking office so the country could put that terrible scandal in the past...(and keep his own ass out of jail!)

24. Caspar Weinberger pardoned last Christmas Eve in office.

Poppy pardoned him on the way out, not just after getting in. The pardon came days before Weinberger's trial was to begin and at which Weinberger promised he would "not go down alone". Weinberger and a whole host of Republicans were pardoned that Christmas Eve. Some of them are in the White House right now.

25. That's what I thought
I just looked him up on wikipedia and they say that he was pardoned by GHWB days before his trial was to begin.

26. Yup. Casper Weinberger on Christmas Eve, 1992.

The trial was supposed to begin in early January, but big bush didn't want to see a 75-year-old "true American patriot" go through an unpleasant ordeal like that. :puke:

On edit: Guess I'm a little slow at typing.

8. Possible isn't it
I'd look for him to be suicided before pardoned. After the pardon there's no reason to not tell what he knows, if I was this guy I'd be paranoid as hell right now.

"services". Hence, blackmail.

20. Either that or mind-blowing arrogance.
The admin. is used to having nothing come out, ever.

It wouldn't surprise me if they simply thought their plant would remain a plant, and no one would find out about Gannon's little side-business.

Though I like your theory better. It has way more tabloid potential.

22. As I've heard over and over...
These guys have a long history of overreaching.

Maybe something will come of this... and maybe not.

I thought for sure the Prisoner Abuse stuff would bring
them down. So far... It hasn't. It's rarely even mentioned
anymore.

Therefore, no breath holding for me.

Would be nice tho...
