Freeper Fun With Hot Spots...
Ahhh...the marvels of modern technology. It appears a friend (and fellow DU member who wants to remain annonymous) has found a fun way to play with the Freepers.

He has a laptop puter he takes everywhere and has become the "lord of wi-fi"...wireless internet. He find an "unprotected" access point...breaks into the internet connection...then has some fun in Freeperland.

His posts carry the IP tracking number of the wireless he broke in on...and as soon as they tombstone him under one name and IP, he drives a couple blocks, finds another open hot spot and is back in business.

A strong suggestion to those with Wireless Routers...make sure they're encrypted as they're easy to break into. Some of these systems can cover several blocks...even if you get crappy signals in certain areas of your home, someone down the street could be sneaking into your system without you knowing it.

1. Hmm
so they tombstone some random wi-fi person's IP and this person isn't able to post on their boards ? Oh HORROR OF HORRORS !!! Not being allowed in Freeptardland !!!

If he gets enough people doing this, maybe they can find and ban people who actually post there regularly. That would be a hoot ^^

4. I Laughed At How He Was Doing It...
He goes into Starbucks...most have "hotspots" now...sets up his lapper, gets a latte and starts, goes to Freeperland, gets the screen name and by the time his latte is done, he's tombstoned...LOL.

Then he goes to another Starbucks and goes again. You used to be able to do this on AOL...they're browsers would connect to the web through their servers and it'd be one of their IPs on the posts...I don't think that's the case any longer.

I was hesitant on posting this since this seems so easy and so much fun...hate to jinx it by talking about it.

Cheers!

10. Bah.
The only way to jinx this. Would be if Wi-Fi developers were to take the time to adjust and make the wi-fi routers issue dynamic independent IPs to all PCs connected. It's too late for the ones out right now, and the issue doesn't seem to be of any import to anyone at the moment.

For now at least it seems like a harmless way to have fun, and prevent people at starbucks from posting trash on the internet.

11. My system has assigned IPs...
Firewalls, Spyware and I even sleep next to the machine with a shotgun at the ready. LOL.

As my initial post hopefully tried to convey, I was amused at him going out and having some fun creating mayhem in Freeperland. This follows the Carlin theory: "If you build a better mousetrap, some schumuck will build a better mouse..."

Cheers!

2. Freepers are totally boring
who cares about what they post. I'll give you an example of freep thinking: Bush is God. Democrats should be jailed. Everything is Beautiful in Iraq and Afghanistan. Our economy has never been better. The rich need to be rewarded while the poor deserve to stew in their own filthy lazy juices. Gays should be hung unless they are conservative gays which gives them salvation.

Have I about covered it?

3. I dunno
You were sounding WAY TOO accepting of gays with that last sentence, at least for a freeper. Everything else was spot-on. GOOD JOB !!! :yourock:

8. True
Keyes kicked his own daughter out of the house for being Lesbian. Maybe it's just Mary Cheney who is an acceptable gay because she turned her back on the gay community in the last election, after she solicited them in 2000 and Cheney bragged about it then.

5. You have it down
Except they want to 'fix' the conservative gays. Through counseling and other forms of deprogramming they can be saved! Can I get an AMEN?

7. Could just use a proxy list
There's a bunch of running lists of proxy servers that are mistakenly left open to public access out on the web, where hackers post their IP addresses and open ports as a "service". A little less ethical, but requires much less transportation.

9. He has discovered Wardriving
Its actually a well established practice. And he probably isn't really wardriving. Instead he is just finding cafes and other sites that have free wireless access.

He's not really breaking in. Its a service many companies provide.

12. War Driving, Eh?
My daughter just told me there's a big deal on her campus about people who buy the wireless cards and these keychain memory chips and use them on other people's machines. That's a bit beyond having a bit of fun.

I've had my wireless here for nearly 3 years now...I love it...but freaked out one day when I saw a strange entry on my wireless network interface. I found out it was a wireless network at my neighbor's house...the name of their network was showing up on my machine...and I found out mine did on theirs. Both of us learned how to encrypt...LOL. Right now I see 6 different wireless routers, and I live on a cul-de-sac...I can only imagine the fun one could have in a large apartment complex....just like the days when you could listen in on cellphone calls on a police scanner. LOL.

Cheers!
