So who's with me on changing MSM to CMC: the Corporate Media Cartel
Two nights ago regnaD kcin made a great point about calling them the mainstream media, when we do this we are hurting ourselves. Using that title automatically paints us as outside of the mainstream or in the fringe. That is not true!

When we call them the corporate media or the CMC online we immediately peg them as the dishonest corporate whores that they are.

I was so moved by her arguments that not only do I feel it important to repeat them over and over on this board, I will from here on out, only refer to them as the CMC or Corporate Media Cartel.

I know it will be hard to wean ourselves from referring to them as the MSM, even JS called them that last night, but we have to correctly label them for the enemies of the state they are.

CMC does this by saddling them with both corporate and cartel. Both words that invoke a negative response from people and that is helpful to us and our cause.

So who's with me, from here on out it is not MSM but CMC.

Besides MSM is soo 2004.

1. I like Corporate Media
Although you should know that Rush Limbaugh has been trying a similar tactic coming from the opposite direction--calling the Mainstream Media the Partisan Media. Don't know if it's really taken off the way he hoped.

Still this would be a good phrase to use.

2. That's one of my pet peeves - I'm with you Melody!
There's NOTHING mainstream about their twisted agenda of greed and manipulation.

3. Corporate Media is sufficient
in my opinion. Adding "cartel" makes it sound a little too tinfoil-hat ish.

6. I prefer to call them CMC online and Corporate media in conversation
Someone said last night that three letters works better online than two.

But seriously which ever you use it certainly is more helpful than MSM.

8. WE can call it that, but it won't mean a durn thing until
some of our fine Dem spokespersons call them that to their faces in interviews. This suggestion needs to travel from the grassroots to the lofty branches.

9. I do think Corporate Media is more accurate in certain contexts.
Except that gets sticky when certain publications/media outlets are both corporate AND on the side of truth. Is the Comedy Channel not corporate?

I think the "mainstream" in MSM is more an allusion to how new outlets of news media have sprung up in recent years. I would caution that you might be buying into the framing of the other side, when they accuse liberals of being out of the mainstream. I reject their accusation out of hand--I'm not buying that "mainstream" is a positive virtue in the first place...so I don't see it as a loaded word.

And a cartel acts in unison, out of a stated common purpose. I don't see the current news biggies at quite that point yet. They are definitely trending in a direction, but I don't think they are acting in explicit collusion yet.

Just sayin'.
