1. what can you say?
at least he tried. You might ask why.

You can't change everyone's mind. Why respond at all?

3. Liar.
That's how I'd respond. Unless the guy was missing a limb or something, and the reason for his exclusion was obvious.

5. In reality, though, it could be something as simple as asthma.
He could be lying, or he could be telling the truth.

12. Sure. But it'd still piss him off.
Who cares if it's true? I'd just get under his skin, personally.

4. Yeah, that definitely requires follow up questions
What branch of service did he try?

Has he tried all of them?

Reserves?

Nat'l Guard?

Coast Guard?

What was the basis for his rejection? Was it something he could get treatment for?

6. He stands for what he believes in
Backing up your rhetoric with sacrifice is a rare trait. Hopefully he can use it to help people.

7. I would assume he's lying
Or say, "Yeah, I know, Republicans have a hard time with the ASVAB. That's why the military likes democrats."

9. You see the worst
Why do you assume he is lying? If you are so righteous why do you leave him to his fate?

11. I would just be playing the numbers. There's a far better chance that
he's lying, than that he's telling the truth.

Doesn't mean he's a liar, but it's a darn good chance.

I don't remember calling myself righteous.

Nor do I have any idea why you would say "leave him to his fate". What fate? Is he dying? Is he going to kill himself? Is there something that is going to happen that I should be saving his life by believing him? Sounds like he's just a normal guy who doesn't have any particular "fate" in his future. I'm not sure what "fate" you think he has in store. "Leave him to his fate" - what does that mean?

8. Should have a selective service card...
... and if he was rejected for service, then he should have received one marked 4-F, or whatever the rating is by today's standards. If his selective service card says 1-A, then he might not be telling the truth.

The law requires that everyone under the age of 26 maintain their record and report any changes in their status within ten days, and if one is rejected for service for any reason, one still has be registered and maintain status:

http://www.sss.gov/sssyou/sssyou.htm

Still, one doesn't know if it was a recent event.

Sounds, though, as if the wingers are catching on to the charge that they aren't carrying their share of the load, and the excuses are now in place.

Cheers.

10. tell him Halliburton/KBR is hiring drivers and carpenters and cooks
There's plenty of jobs to be had over there supporting the logistics of Imperial Occupation. Enlisting in the military is but one way he can actively support the war he loves so much.

16. Hey, it's the natural choice -- grab a piece of that no-bid contract, eh?
What could be more Republican than that? Subsidized imperial free-enterprise at its best, Her Majesty's East India Company couldn't have done it better. He has an ideological as well as a moral obligation to assist in Halliburton's Persian endeavors!
