2. Hunter was a journalist with balls, a rarity anymore.

He will be missed.

4. what sad news to wake up to. :(
I have "Hey Rube" checked out of the norwich CT library at the moment and I don't even a big sports fan(it seems mostly politics so far anyway). i just woke my sister up and told her. i can hear her sniffling upstairs still. she sat one day a few years back and bought every one of his books on amazon.com. we have all of them here except maybe his last two or three.

I will have to read those NYT book reviews. I have "Hells Angels" in my pile of "to read" books along with your book. thanks for the NYT link. :hi:

5. Put Hells' Angels on top
Edited on Mon Feb-21-05 08:26 AM by WilliamPitt
It's his first significant piece, and arguably his best. Some fine writing, hilarious and really disturbing. Hunter Thompson The Writer didn't exist yet; this was a guy on a BSA riding with a biker gang for a year and then writing about it. You won't have as much appreciation for the later stuff if you don't get to know his early work.

His story of that year weaves through Berkely and the anti-war protests, up to La Honda with the Pranksters, and all the way out to the Weirs Beach Riot during the Laconia bike rally in '65.

Read it first.

8. I find it to be almost "alternative" Thompson
"Hell's Angels" is a wonderful book but it doesn't have the madness of the later gonzo books. Thompson is basically in Tom Wolfe/Norman Mailer territory, albeit getting a little wilder than either of them ever got. He doesn't have a lot of the tics and style he would later develop but is probably a better reporter at this point than any other time. It's really fascinating to see gonzo-in-training.

He also has a hell of a good story to tell.
