uy it. If 1000 DU'ers each put up $220.00 we could buy this house.

http://www.search.harmonhomes.com/browse/homes-for-sale/New-York/Greenwich/results/detail/7935841

I'll live in it and maintain it and pay rent. Seems that there are enough bedrooms and baths that Du'ers could come visit. Like a time share.

And we should start our own insurance company too. Just thinking outside the box

But, this is a great idea. It would be great for publicity.

I'd go in on it.

I've always thought that a non-profit health insuruance company would be a good idea.

Maybe it's just the Bay Area paranoia.. but it sounds too good.

9. I'll give you a damned Susan B. Anthony dollar.
I hate those coins, but I love that woman. Go figure, it takes a government to really screw up coinage to memorialize possibly one of the greatest figures of 20th Cent. American politics.

13. We should buy it, as Du'ers as a political statement
the pubs will drain anwar(alaska oil) We will own a historic site that is important in the history of democracy. We could get good press and be more than a discussion board.

14. It's a neat idea! But find out exact proerty taxes - $$$ in NYS
We are closing on a house in Columbia Cty NY on Monday under 200K yet the property taxes are almost $5000 per year.

I'm not trying to scare you off, AT ALL, but just mentionioning something you need to check out thoroughly. Don't trust the real estate agent or the owner on the taxes either. My house had the taxes listed as about $3500 but I actually had to call the county and check the millage before getting the actual property tax rate.

I think it's a terrific idea and hope you can get it going (and would chip in a pledge if the ball is rolling forward on it).

16. The house is not listed on the National Registry or NY States Registry.
http://web.indstate.edu/aauw-in/women9.html

You will need to check further on the claim that she grew up there. From the above link it shows that the family migrated from Mass. to Hardscrabble NY (outside Rochester)when she was fairly young. Prior she was in school in Pa.

Nothing precludes a person from owing a historic property, one can also do what they wish with it even if it is listed. It also does not need to be open to the public. There is a National Susan B. Anthony historic site & home in Rochester.

23. And the Susan B. Anthony house is open to the public most
days, where they give guided interpretive tours.

I took my mother, a "women's libber" from way back, to see it when my parents visited one year. She was underimpressed: Susan B. did not live an opulent life, but nobody would expect her to. It was an interesting tour.

17. It actually looks like a good deal and you could make extra $
off the apartment. If you restored it to her time and collected some memorabilia you might offer tours during the tourist season, too. If I lived in that area I'd seriously consider it.

I live in NY -- Greenwich is near Saratoga Springs, not far from Vermont. The sticks, but a beautiful area.

If you rented the apartment... hmm... I don't know what rents go for there but it could probably cover the property taxes.

Seriously... if you do it PM me.

19. I have suggested that DUers...
do this kind of thing before...we should pool our resources, and buy property in cities, and that contributing members can stay for free. We can also eventually borrow against our property, and expand to foreign real estate. Yeah, I know we need to iron out alot of details, but we really should think about it. That being said...I am in, all the way...even from Ohio!

I like it. The downstairs apartment could be made historical/educational AND perhaps be rented out for overnight stays, like a B&B. Contact historic preservation groups as well as the progressive women's groups noted above. You will want lots of input!

& please add me to the list of people to PM if you decide to go through with this.

Check with the T/Greenwich Historian & County Historian they may have some enlightening info.

Well perhaps there is some hope I checked the towns history on the Cornell site "Making of America" the book didn't appear to mention her. Some more scouting around and I find another tidbit.

http://www.rootsweb.com/~nywashin/schoolhi.htm

The first school stood on a lot occupied by Fairbanks Cottage on Gray Ave. Susan B. Anthony taught there. Later, a little red schoolhouse stood opposite the Baptist Church near where Mr. I.V. Gill lives

<snip>

Susan B. Anthony attended school in Greenwich and taught school here. She later became famous for women's suffrage.
