The Democratic Party lost a great member last night!
My husband's grandmother, a life long Democrat who didn't like Reagan, Bush Sr., and especially didn't like W died last night at the age of 96! Having lived through so much, the depression, the development of the Television, the Cuban Missile Crisis (She was in Miami when all that happened), the assassination of John F. Kennedy Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy, oh, too many to mention, she understood what it meant to be a good person. She taught me what it meant to be a good democrat and how important it is to get involved with the party and issues important to me.

RIP Irene

Indeed another Democrat voice silenced, yet not so, you are her legacy. You now, her voice.

5. May she rest in peace.
Hail Mary, full of grace,
The Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women
And blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, mother of God,
Pray for us sinners,
Now, and at the hour of our death.

Amen.

13. My condolences but take heart in all of the good, honest
liberals she has left behind because of her. She will be missed by her family and friends but you can honor her by continuing the fight.

Both of my grandparents were good old fashion democrats who lived their religion, their politics and their kindness to everyone they met. They lived through the same things that your grandmother-in-law did and they were the stronger for it. But they both worked to make sure that their kids, grandkids and great-grandkids never had to face the same tragedies. My family was so blessed to have their guidance. My grandfather would be aghast at what our country has become today. He was a politician in our small town and held several local elected positions. He fought with the best of them but I never heard him say one bad word about a single soul - Democrat or Republican, devout or atheist, rich or poor.

I just don't want these fine people to be a dying breed. Become her legacy.

I would tell you that she could hang around with my father who died on the 6th (if the xians are right about heaven), but he was a pretty strong conservative. Though, ironically, he taught me what I needed to be such a strong liberal.

14. Thank you everyone...
No matter how much you think you're prepared for a loved ones death, it still is tough. Having been raised Catholic, and my husband's family being Jewish, it wasn't easy to get along w/ them in the beginning, she was the first person to "welcome" me into my husband's family.- (tomorrow my husband and I will be married 16 years) I'll miss her each and every day. I am thankful that she gave my husband her engagement ring, that so happened to also have been her mother's. I feel like I will always have a great connection to her.

Thanks again everyone for your condolences.

16. It would probably make her happy if we build on her work as a Democrat
and a good person. You are lucky to have had Irene in your life - as we are lucky that you are working as a Democrat now.

I, too, have had strong Democrats as role models, some of which have passed on. I miss them as I know you will miss Irene.

Sorry for your pain in losing her.

17. Sounds like you knew her well...
So maybe when you feel OK with it, you could share some of her words with us?
Stories about her, random stuff she said that affected you?

I have found that passing along wit and wisdom is the best way to honor my departed friends.

18. My sympathies. She sounds like a great woman
A lot like my Grandmother G (3rdGenDem) who taught me at an early age not only to never trust Republicans but, more specifically, that Richard Nixon was a lying, oily SOB who would be put in the ground with a corkscrew (I never checked into the details to see if that turned out to be true). This was years before RMN won the '68 election.
Gramma G and Irene would've gotten along famously. Again, my sympathies to you and the family.
John
Gram was one of thirteen children. To the best of my memory, none of them were Republicans. In 1984, when she was 89, she had me make up a bunch of tee shirts which said "Cure Reaganitis -- Vote Democratic!" The Gipper won easily, anyhow -- but not for a lack of effort on Gram's part.

21. Your Gram sounded like a great lady!
I would have loved to have seen her wearing that t-shirt.

I'm sure Irene and your grandmother are up in heaven playing cards right now!

Irene couldn't stand Reagen either...I forgot to mention that.

23. I'm so sorry.
It is so good for me to watch C-span and see all these seniors that are active and engaged in the party.

I need these role models since my family are all wingnuts.

My thoughts and prayers are with you.
