Al Franken interviews Stephen Colbert of the Daily Show

Al Franken interviewed Colbert on Monday.

Franken asked Colbert why the story of seriously fake journalist (not comedically fake) "Jeff Gannon" isn't getting more converage. ("Jeff Gannon," whose real name is James Guckert, was admitted to almost every White House press briefing for two years between 2003-2005 in spite of lack of journalistic credentials. "Jeff Gannon" used the platform to smear Democrats).

Franken asking Colbert about "Jeff Gannon" is analogous to someone asking magician James Randi, who-says-he doesn't-have-magical-powers-and-doesn'-believe-in-the-suprernatural, about performer Uri Gellar, who claims to have psychic powers.

Stephen Colbert answered that there is an expression, "The greatest trick the devil ever played on Man was conviing him that he didn't exist."

Similarly, "one of the greatest tricks... the Right..has played on the American public is that journalism doesn't exist."

On Fox News, they're asking questions, and so it must be journalism;" the form is the thing," Colbert says the Right implies.

At its best, Colbert said, journalism is a "liberal event:" questioning of power.

That is why the rightwing wants to de-legitimize journalism.
