Sen.Stevens will be depressed and quit if Anwar isn't drilled - really

Struggle to open ANWR leaves Stevens 'depressed'

Sen. Ted Stevens said Friday he's been suffering from "clinical depression" for the past year over his failure to get Congress to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil exploration and will consider retirement when his term ends in 2008 if such a measure is stripped from the budget next week.

Stevens, 81, later upgraded his condition and said he is not taking medication for depression or seeing a therapist. He said his personal physician has told him to take more time off from work.

But Stevens, an Alaska Republican, said his normally peppery temper has become uncharacteristically short, even toward his loyal staff. He said he is confronting his own guilt for agreeing to the compromise that put the refuge off-limits in 1980, along with the reality that his World War II generation is rapidly fading from the scene and with it the sense that oil is a strategic commodity that should not be locked in the ground.

4. if he's ill he can retire right now
If he really has clinical depression, he should take his meds and talk to his therapist. If he wants to pretend to be ill to gain pity, that it just pathetic in a man his age.

and other subversives. We intend to clean them out,
even if it means rounding up every birdwatcher in the country.

6. Waah, waah, waah
You know, between Ted Stevens the environmental rapist and Charlie Swaney who lives in Arctic Village, I'm a little more inclined to credit Charlie's opinion as to what will and will not cause damage to his town, his people, his land and his way of life.

Resign Mr. Stevens. You're only embarrassing yourself right now. But you will soon embarrass the entire state of Alaska.

8. This smacks of Oral Roberts' "God will call me home" schtick...
he used in 1987 to raise $8,000,000.

So perhaps Stevens is trying this strategy with his "If we don't drill there soon, I'll go insane" approach...

If he doesn't come through with opening the Anwar oil fields, this oil & gas contributors are going to put their money elsewhere and he won't have the funds to run again.

I wonder if he realizes that he's almost 100 years old and that he's going to be four years older by the time the elections roll around again. Maybe we can FINALLY get a Democratic senator down there with any luck at all.

17. Don't Let The Door Hit Ya...
...where the invisible cloud being split ya...

Stevens is such a corporate toadie he wouldn't have the stones to actually do this since that'd mean really taking a stand and having conviction. Probably his phone rang and he was told to sit down and shut up.

18. I hope that mindset about resources dies with him.
A lot of people in his generation had sense enough to defy that attitude.

23. Yes, I think he's outstayed his welcome in Washington DC...
...not that he hasn't brought the pork home to Alaska, but I think he needs to give someone a little more forward-looking a chance at representing our interests.
