Mount Kilimanjaro Photo Wake-Up Call for Action Against Global Warming

by Jeremy Lovell

LONDON -- A photo of Mount Kilimanjaro stripped of its snowcap for the first time in 11,000 years will be used as dramatic testimony for action against global warming as ministers from the world's biggest polluters meet on Tuesday.

Gathering in London for a two-day brainstorming session on the environment agenda of Britain's presidency of the Group of Eight rich nations, the environment and energy ministers from 20 countries will be handed a book containing the stark image of Africa's tallest mountain, among others.

"This is a wake-up call and an unequivocal message that a low-carbon global economy is necessary, achievable and affordable," said Steve Howard of the Climate Group charity which organised the book and an associated exhibition.

"We are breaking climate change out of the environment box. This crisis affects all of us. This is a global challenge and we need real leadership to address these major problems -- and these ministers can give that leadership," he told Reuters.

2. Too bad it's a black/white photo.
Repubs will think it is covered with coal and will want to go strip-mine it.

Seriously, this is bad news that needs a spotlight on it in the worst way. I fear it may already be too late, but if we keep ignoring the writing on the wall it will definitely be too late.

5. Are we supposed to compare the two photos and come to some conclusion?
I don't see how we can do that. If you took one picture of me from behind, in the morning, and another picture of me from above, in the afternoon, and then compared the two pictures, you might come to the conclusion that I had lost a lot of hair in just a few hours.

Am I missing the point of the two pictures here? Wouldn't it be better to show two pictures, taken from the same vantage point, some years apart?

6. That's how I remember it. It is rare to see it on a clear day.
It is truly magnificent. I was going to climb it, but my visa was running out. I didn't have the time. The top picture was probably from Moshe Tanzania.

I only have 20 years left on this earth. In some ways I find it comforting. The greed-heads have ignored the warnings for decades, now they have destroyed the balance needed to ensure survival of our species. In these remaining decades I will fight to protect those who have the majority of their lives to live.
