The Ten Commandments ARE NOT THE FIRST WRITTEN LAWS!!! Hammurabi's code
Edited on Sun Mar-20-05 03:18 PM by Melodybe
is generally given credit for being the first written law. Remember an "eye for an eye"? It comes from Hammurabi's code! There are even some Summarian texts that are earlier. As early as 2000 BC, Hammurabi was 1700 BC.

It just drives me nuts when intelligent liberals get on tv and have nothing to say to a jerk that says the ten commandments should be allowed because it is the first written law. IT"S NOT!!!!

So can we please shut the idiots up on this one.

2. Amen! That Code of Hammerabi Was Also Erected Much As..
The Ten Commandments are today to stand visibly in the face of the people to 'keep them in line' and to surely keep them 'in shock and awe'..In some respects both of these ancient rock hard legal codes have been aimed in the faces of people and were aimed to be used as a means of weaponry of intimidation style 'control'..

3. You're wrong.
Not only were the Ten Commandments the very first law EVER, all men have one less rib than women (God took one to make Eve), the Great Flood covered the entire earth (not just the Fertile Crescent), the universe was created in 6 days (evolution? bah!), and the value of pi is 3.0 (not an infinite ratio like those crazy mathemeticians try to tell you).

The Bible says so, and that's good enough for me.

4. It is actually "The Code of Dungi"
Hammurabi is just given credit for them even though they were around long before he was even born.

7. The GOP does not like to talk about poo-poo, now!
So stop with the dung, or dungi, already! And Hammurabi has too many syllables, and it's what drunks do to some poor bastard named Rabi after they stumble out of the bar looking for a fight! Remember, only JESUS saves...no one else does, because of rising prices...

5. We need leaders who will state - loudly - that the fundies are WRONG.
We need our people who believe these nutjobs are WRONG to not be afraid to SAY SO - in public, via whatever media possible, anywhere possible, as LOUD as possible, as often as possible. It's OK to say to that the rapturistas are WRONG - we have to quit being so afraid to tell the truth! Speaking out & EXPOSING the idiocy of the XtianTaliban is one of the only good ways to deal with it. To be fearful & say nothing is to hand victory to them on a silver platter. SPEAK UP & SPEAK OUT in any venue you can - just as the fundies do (except you'll be standing up for the truth)!

6. Interestingly enough...
the 10 commandments that are in the Bible ...

(the first mention of 'commandments' and when Moses comes down with the 2 big blocks is in Exodus 34:13-28)

are NOT the ones that religious nuts and right-wing politicians want to post in schools, public buildings, etc...

Check it (sorry for the length...)

Exodus 34:13-28 (King James Version)

King James Version (KJV)

13 But ye shall destroy their altars, break their images, and cut down their groves:

14 For thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God:

   15 Lest thou make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and they go a whoring after their gods, and do sacrifice unto their gods, and one call thee, and thou eat of his sacrifice;

16 And thou take of their daughters unto thy sons, and their daughters go a whoring after their gods, and make thy sons go a whoring after their gods.

17 Thou shalt make thee no molten gods.

18 The feast of unleavened bread shalt thou keep. Seven days thou shalt eat unleavened bread, as I commanded thee, in the time of the month Abib: for in the month Abib thou camest out from Egypt.

19 All that openeth the matrix is mine; and every firstling among thy cattle, whether ox or sheep, that is male.

20 But the firstling of an ass thou shalt redeem with a lamb: and if thou redeem him not, then shalt thou break his neck. All the firstborn of thy sons thou shalt redeem. And none shall appear before me empty.

21 Six days thou shalt work, but on the seventh day thou shalt rest: in earing time and in harvest thou shalt rest.

22 And thou shalt observe the feast of weeks, of the firstfruits of wheat harvest, and the feast of ingathering at the year's end.

23 Thrice in the year shall all your menchildren appear before the LORD God, the God of Israel.

24 For I will cast out the nations before thee, and enlarge thy borders: neither shall any man desire thy land, when thou shalt go up to appear before the LORD thy God thrice in the year.

25 Thou shalt not offer the blood of my sacrifice with leaven; neither shall the sacrifice of the feast of the passover be left unto the morning.

26 The first of the firstfruits of thy land thou shalt bring unto the house of the LORD thy God. Thou shalt not seethe a kid in his mother's milk.

27 And the LORD said unto Moses, Write thou these words: for after the tenor of these words I have made a covenant with thee and with Israel.

28 And he was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights; he did neither eat bread, nor drink water. And he wrote upon the tables the words of the covenant, the ten commandments.

Actually I've seen him get this wrong at least 3 times.

It drives me nuts, I just want DUers to know the truth on this argument so that when confronted with some RW bull shit they will have an honest response.
