Edwards Will Announce Candidacy on 'Daily Show' (tonight)
Edited on Mon Sep-15-03 09:51 AM by orangepeel68
LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - In October 2002, North Carolina Senator John Edwards assured "Daily Show" host Jon Stewart that if he were going to run for the Democratic presidential nomination, he reveal his intentions first on the Comedy Central fake news show. True to his word (which bodes badly for his political chances), Edwards will appear on Monday night's (Sept. 15) "Daily Show" to formally announce his candidacy.

Well, that's different. Will he play the sax?

1. That's an amusing commentary on the state of TV News.
It's nice that Edwards keeps his word, and it's amsuing that the Daily Show is every bit as legitimate as the other "news" stations.

6. and unlike GMA, Today Show, Regis, CNN, etc, Daily Show's reason for
being isn't to sell a lot of shit.

He probably picked the only show on TV that isn't trying to synergize and plug products (except when the interview a celebrity with a movie out).

19. it would draw comparisons to Arnold on Leno, too risky
besides, he made a promise to Stewart

but if Edwards wins the nomination, he'll be on Letterman.

25. Clinton went on the Arsenio Hall show.
And everyone was all "playing the sax isn't presidential".

He went on MTV, Poppy didn't.

Who was president for 8 years?

15. SMART--for three reasons:
Edited on Mon Sep-15-03 10:31 AM by tjdee
1-Clark is announcing on Wednesday (supposedly), and this is a way to keep HIS name in the news for a bit longer (at least a day);

2-The Daily Show has a young constituency, and Edwards is very, very smart to go at them. Jon Stewart is a damn fine guy to spend some time with, and he knows what's going on. It's different, and for all the traditionally minded old fogies (or, LOL, those who don't watch the Daily Show), he's going to give a speech tomorrow in Robbins, I believe.

3-Shows he keeps his word.

AWESOME. Edwards is one bright guy, I just hope his work pays off for him.

17. "I just hope his work pays off for him" - Tjdee. So true.
If only the great promise of his campaign is fulfilled. He really has worked hard. But I think he's ready now. We have lift-off. I just posted that in another thread - but that is the feeling I have right now - that rush as the plane starts to take off. I do think it is a metaphor for his campaign.

16. I thought Edwards
was already running for president? What am I missing here? He's been in all the debates -- I saw him in Iowa on Saturday and it was obvious he thinks he's a serious candidate. Has he just been kind of hanging out around the other guys who are running and is just NOW making up his mind?

(walks away, shaking her head in bewilderment)

24. You mean like Dean and Kerry?
Dean has been running since he was governor and just recently announced. Kerry, been running forever and just announced.

It's a silly thing, but 'forming an exploratory committee' is different than 'announcing the start of a campaign'.

31. Dean announced several months ago.
The astrologers here at DU did a chart for his announcement and weren't too crazy about his prospects based on it, and his birth time. I think it was before the new improved DU.

29. Traditionally, if you were thinking of running for president, you'd file
with the FCC (you register your committee), which alows you to rasie funds. Once you see that you can raise the money, you then announce that you're running for president. The announecement generally gets a lot of publicity, so it's timed to maximize exposure at a moment when you want lots of exposure.

this should give him an added boost, the more exposure edwards gets, the better.

21. I think it's a win/win actually
I've seen more mention of the Daily Show lately and it's getting more recognition than just a "fake news show" would merit. I think we all know why that is.

To me it seems both Stewart and Edwards are stars in the making. Considering what a huge and disinfranchised demographic watches Stewart, smart play by Edwards.

I can't see the dark lining in this cloud. I like it.

30. News more real than most
That's why the show was nominated for Television Critics' Association awards for both "Outstanding Achievement in Comedy" and "Outstanding Achievement in News and Information." It's also won a Peabody and has been nominated for an Emmy for writing (not for news, unfortunately).

Then again, until the show wins a Polk after Jon Stewart leaves the show, he can't be considered a "real journalist" like O'Reilly.

Sarcasm Alert!!! No, for you literal minded folk out there, Jon is NOT considering leaving the show.
