9. Me too. What's up with Carter
He hasn't been mentioned, but if anyone has credentials close to JPII's on human rights, it's President Carter.

Why no mention of him? (sorry I've missed any discussion on the matter thus far)

20. I doubt he will...
I think Carter is still pissed at Kennedy from 1980. I don't think there's a lot of love lost between the two of them (although now might be a good time to heal those wounds).

6. Definitely a populist in many ways.
Though his views on women's issues could stand some revisions.

11. It takes time
He at least was not a big chauvinist. He respected women and the Virgin Mary was someone he cared about. His mother died when he was very young so I think he had an affinity to women and missed them. Don't forget he was 84 and grew up in a different time. He also grew up in the catholic church and they didn't care much for women. Like the Repukes they don't like women they are afraid of them.

22. He was neither and both
He was anti-war, but also pro-life. If you're going to be pro-life, then it makes sense to be anti-war. I admire the Catholics who understand that.

So depending what the issue was, he either agreed with the peaceniks, or with some of the more Conservative folk. It depended. He had his moments, did JPII.

Good grief, I almost typed, "He had his moments, he had some style."

No, no, Bush is Evita, not the pope! Bush is the one on his Rainbow tour, even though the Pope is going out Evita-style. Or maybe it was Evita who went out Pope-style.

I'm confused. And probably going to hell.

Shameless hypocrites! I think Carter should hitch a ride with his fellow dems and screw those misfits!

Peace!

18. I would
I'd rather go with Kerry and Kennedy. Probably have better conversations on the ride and better company. Plus you don't have to worry about Bush trying to get in the front. :eyes:

of Dubya not giving them all infantile nicknames cause he's too fucking stupid to remember their actual names.

21. Has anybody seen Kerry speak on the Pope on TV?
Being Catholic I would think Kerry would be asked his opinion.

BTW, in the sea of Pope Tribute Specials on TV, PBS had a good, two-hour, in-depth look at the man and Pope: Witness to Hope
a biography of Pope John Paul II. In 1978, the Polish-born pontiff (formerly Karol Jozef Wojtyla) became the first non-Italian pope since the Dutch-bred Adrian VI in 1522.

Paints a picture of his life in Poland: WWII, communism, his incredible will and intellect nd the development of his philosophies. I think John Paul II will be remembered in history along side Gandhi, Mandela, MLK, etc. as men who brought about enormous change through peaceful means.
