Health Advisers Recommend Lifting Breast Implant Ban
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Published: April 13, 2005

WASHINGTON -- In a surprising turnaround, federal health advisers Wednesday recommended allowing silicone-gel breast implants to return to the U.S. market after a 13-year ban on most uses of the devices -- but only under strict conditions that will limit how easily women can get them.
Mentor Corp. persuaded advisers to the Food and Drug Administration that its newer silicone implants are reasonably safe and more durable than older versions. The 7-2 vote came just one day after a rival manufacturer, Inamed Corp., failed to satisfy lingering concerns about how often the implants break apart and leak inside women's bodies.

FDA's advisers said Wednesday that Mentor had performed more convincing research that the implants only rarely break in the first few years after they're inserted -- about 1.4 percent over three years -- and showed some evidence that they may last as long as 10 years.

But they stressed that sales should resume only if Mentor meets some strict conditions: --Prospective patients must sign consent forms acknowledging implant risks, including that they ultimately may break and require removal or replacement. --Mentor may sell silicone implants only to board-certified plastic surgeons who complete special hands-on training to insert implants in a way that minimizes odds of breakage. --Mentor must open a registry to track how patients fare long-term, and continue more formal studies to nail down how often implants rupture within 10 years, something no one yet knows.

Seriously, men would never allow something that could pretty much screw up your body anywhere near their genitalia but they're happy to put out in the market something that has ruined hundred of womens lives - women who for man (but not all) are doing this disconfiguration just to please of all things - men. (yes, I realize some women do get breast implants because of cancer - that's a different story).

It's just that the FDA seems to be all about making men happy - keep their dicks erect and their women's breasts large. Yet if I'm lucky enough to have health benefits and if those health benefits just happen to cover birth control, I still might have to put up with some jerk who won't fill my prescription because god forbid I might have sex even though I'm an unmarried woman

1. there are a lot worse things you can to do your body
just like smoking... everybody knows the risk of implants. what people chose to do with their body is their own business.

2. There are cosmetic implants for men too,
There are flexible silicone chest implants for guys too lazy to build real pectoral muscle mass. They look like odd-shaped steaks and are implanted under the muscle.

They're firmer than female breast implants because they are supposed to look more solid, with less jiggle.

3. ...or so you assume.
Of course. Make up an argument about unfairness and then argue the entirely made-up bullshit argument.

"So the FDA is considering breast implants? Well, I assume they wouldn't consider penile implants! Time to start a 500-word rant about how unfair the FDA is for allowing relatively safe breast implants but disallowing non-existent penile implants in my own mind!"

6. Women would never let it pass unnoticed
Women can be harsh to other women who have breast implants, but if you really want to get the girls' room to break out in peals of laughter, one phrase will do it best: Penis Pump.

And Gawd help the man with vascular problems or Peyronie's Disease who has to use one!

No, the breast implant business isn't based on sexism. It's based on physicians with too much power, and society's idiotic demands that women aren't desirable unless they have big boobs.

7. Based on REAL science silicone implants were safe
Data showed that the number of people who got sick who had silicone implants would have gotten sick anyway. All the screaming and yelling by a few people who more than likely would have gotten sick with or without implants created a false impression of the facts. The ignorance of the data on this subject reminds me of the ignorance of the facts on the Terri Schiavo case. I wish people would take the time to educate themselves rather than spread false info.

8. I tend to agree...
Silicone implants are safe. And if you are that much concerned, go for the saline, or better yet opt out....

11. yes and no!
yes some of us chose them..and no we were lied to !
i was told that all the testing in the world was done on them..and so was the doctor, and so was the government..and they and i were all lied to!
i was told if a car hit me at 65 miles an hour and i hit the stearing wheel they would never burst..
i was told all auto imune tests showed no problem..
i was told that they were the safest product available !
i asked all the questions..i went with a two page list of questions , i demanded test results from the comapnies making them.
I asked for test results in the breaking..

i was given all these so called test results..

and the test results were all so called documented through the government , cdc, the whole kit and caboodle.
i was a great consumer..i asked all the questions reguarding safety.

i now have lupis from them.
and i have been told by a mirage of doctors to leave them in as trying to remove them they are falling apart and causing more problems than leaving them in.

i have been part of the class action suit./
it has now been over 13 yrs and not a dime has been sent out to anyone!
the first thing the republican congress did the day they took control of congress under clinton was allowed dow chemical to separate into two corporations to screw us ( less money they had to pay out for damages!)

if anyone thinks they will allow this and if there are further problems down the road..understand ..many innocent people will be dead before they collect for deliberate malfeasance.

the corps know that and the lovely repubs could give a rats ass about women!
and furthermore not all women had them for vanity reasons some had them for medical reasons after cancers.

women were lied to by these corporations and the government was lied to by these corporations, and doctors were lied to by these corporations because their so called tests were never ever done..their test results were all bogus ..no studies were ever done by most of these companies it was all lies!

and don't think they won't do it again!

now you know about me... but i think its my responsibility to warn others.

10. What I find more pathetic are the people who take out loans to pay
for cosmetic surgery that is unnecessary.

To get a really good set of implants you have to pay nearly $10,000 so some women take out healthcare loans to pay for them.

Personally I would rather save for a trip to Europe or invest the money rather than have bigger tits..

IMHO I think that the only necessary implants are for women who have suffered through breast cancer...

I think of all those poor kids born with cleft palate, disfiguring diseases who can't afford care and yet some people elect to get butt implants, bigger breasts and have someone give them a celebrity's nose...it just seems so unfair...
