Artivist Film Festival: Art and Activism Come Together in Hollywood
The Artivist Film Festival: Art and Activism Come Together in Hollywood
20 April 2005

Today, the 2nd annual Artivist Film Festival opens in Hollywood. The 5 day Artivist Film Festival will feature 70 films from 26 different countries, “raising awareness for International Human Rights, Children’s Advocacy, Environmental Preservation, and Animal Advocacy.”

Mayor James K. Hahn has officially proclaimed Wednesday, April 20th, 2005 as "ARTIVIST DAY", (a day to celebrate activism through the arts), for the City of Los Angeles.

The diversity of films being presented at The 2nd Annual Artivist Film Festival reflects our mission of creating an artistic, activist arena for global awareness.

In addition, The 2005 Artivist Awards will honor the work of outstanding Charities of the Year :

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL for Human Rights
GLOBAL GREEN for Environmental Preservation
FARM SANCTUARY for Animal Rights.
PREVENT CHILD ABUSE AMERICA for Children's Advocacy
This evening, I will be attending the opening night screening of Trudell, a documentary based on the life of Native American activist, actor, singer and poet John Trudell.

TRUDELL is a captivating, moving film that weaves archival footage and contemporary interviews together with John Trudell’s own words and music in a mystic way. The film artistically portrays the passionate, painful and multi-dimensional life of this Dakota man who went from being a spokesperson for the Indians of All Tribes occupation of Alcatraz Island in 1968 to Chairman of the American Indian Movement in the turbulent 1970’s to an internationally recognized poet, recording artist and actor in the 1980’s and 90’s.

Along with the power of Trudell’s words, the film includes historic footage that documents the rise of the American Indian Movement (AIM) as well as interviews with Trudell’s AIM colleagues and close associates in the movie and music industries. Cherokee Chief Wilma Mankiller is featured as well as close friend Jackson Browne, Robert Redford, Kris Kristofferson and others, along with Trudell’s band and family.

"I'm just a human being trying to make it in a world that is very rapidly losing its understanding of being human." - John Trudell

You can watch the TRUDELL trailer here and listen to a taste of John Trudell’s music here.
