I Just Joined AARP!

I'm going to be 50 in June and I got my form today.

This is no biggie, but I thought I'd share it since AARP has becone a current whipping post for the righties. I LOVE the opportunity to piss the right wingers off by doing nothing but accepting something I'm eligible for simply because I've drawn breath for a half a century as of June.

The neat thing is that my wife (DUer ChicaAzul) will be able to share in the benefits even though she's a sprightly youngster several years younger than I (I'm a cradle robber, she apparently likes fossils!).

In spite of the benefits, I'm just happy to do my little part to thumb my noses at the right!

2. I've been an AARP member for a few years now.

There are some great benefits, such as discounted car insurance, car rentals, hotel stays, travel bargains and a whole lot more.

But you are going to get flamed because there are some people on these forums who do not care for AARP.

I worked in the legislative division there for five years. You would be hard-pressed to find a group of smarter, harder working, and dedicated people than the folks at AARP. Sure, they've made missteps (the Medicare prescription drug fiasco, at the behest of their Executive Director), but they're working for the interests of older Americans in fighting Bush's Social Security rip-off.

I knew as soon as rich lowery, et al started to slime them and encourage people to drop out that I was going to join at first opportunity!

I don't want a gun since my wife doesn't like them and we have a 5 year old in the house.

With the level of violence being threatened by the looney righties, I'm starting to wonder though.

i quit them over the prescription drug hoax they were involved in, but they may have redeemed themselves somewhat by defending SS.

i didn't use & don't miss the bennies, as i don't travel much, but i imagine they're useful to others.

...but for me it was the simple joy of pissing off the righties!

It's worth that to me even if I NEVER do a damn thing with the benefits!
