John F. Kennedy: What is a liberal?
Edited on Tue Apr-26-05 03:59 PM by merh

What do our opponents mean when they apply to us the label "Liberal?" If by "Liberal" they mean, as they want people to believe, someone who is soft in his policies abroad, who is against local government, and who is unconcerned with the taxpayer's dollar, then the record of this party and its members demonstrate that we are not that kind of "Liberal." But if by a "Liberal" they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people -- their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, and their civil liberties -- someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a "Liberal," then I'm proud to say I'm a 'Liberal.'"

-John F. Kennedy September 14, 1960

they are against liberalism.

3. i've been thinking about a line of buttons- typical liberals
al franken and his ditto head friend were discussing rush's pre-emptive strike on jimmy carter in the week or so before the election commission hearings. he ranted about "what has jimmy carter ever done to make the world a better place? go to a few meetings with his pals, pat each other on the back? typical liberal."
so franken rattled of just a fraction of carter's efforts to solve health problems in africa, in particular the simple, common sense but effective measures to prevent river blindness. he ended his rant by saying, "well, i do agree with rush about one thing. yup. jimmy is a typical liberal. that's just the kind of thing that liberals do."
so, i have been thinking about a bunch of buttons, each with the picture of someone like jimmy, mlk, ghandi, jfk, fdr, and so on, ringed with the words, typical liberal.
so, who would you add to that list?

5. I have a quote to share...
Edited on Tue Apr-26-05 04:18 PM by fooj
"Let us resolve to be masters, not the victims, of our history, controlling our own destiny without giving way to blind suspicions and emotions."-J.F.K.

It falls under "moving forward"- correct? New ideas...

Peace.

was a liberal and they are idiots!

11. Well, I understand your position.
Sadly, I can't think of any other liberals than those you have listed.

Let me know about the pins! :hi:
