High School Senior told to tone down Anti-Bush report
I am trying to find a link for this story, but a local radio talk show host, Jim Philips, was talking about it today.

The girl wrote her senior report on Bush, and apparently in her research, she came to the conclusion that Bush was hurting the country. Supposedly the assistant principal had her in the office and on the dl suggested that she "tone it down" or she might not be graded fairly.

What a crock of shit. If I were her, I would use the 1st Amendment as a preface and give them the report as is.

If anyone can find the link, or has seen the story and can link me, I would appreciate it. I am still looking.

:)

1. I'd go to the ACLU
She has the right to write her report any way she wants and if she wants to write an anti-Bush report so be it. It's her right. I've never had any trouble with any teachers or professors telling me I couldn't write what I did. They just graded it on the grammer side and even made suggestions on my grammer as they should.

3. Yes, I can understand grading grammar
punctuation, repetitiveness, etc, but opinion after reasearch! I would go on the news about it if I were her. Then what could the school do?

2. reminds me of the time
my husband was required to write an essay comparing Communism and democracy. He spent all his time explaining that the former is an economic system while the latter was a political one. He was given a failing grade. Of course, it was a Texas high school. My Illinois high school would have given me an A or never asked the question.

Hope the student and her parents give the school holy heck for stifling her free speech. Maybe her next report could be on the pervasion of fascism in this country.

4.  Yes, I would write the report on the 1st amendment and how
Bush and the school have violated it.

6. If I Were Her
I would not edit the paper a single damn bit, turn it in and if they don't like the work, then they could give me a poor grade. But I for damn sure wouldn't let someone censor my beliefs/opinions in my OWN work.

Screw the 1st amendment eh?

8. The ONLY way I could understand telling
a student to tone down the report would be if threats were conveyed to the president. Opinions on his job performance are quite another issue.

7. My teacher is a open Repub and a Bush supporter, BUT
we were asked to write a 'response' to the SOTU in January. I wrote 2-3 pages refuting every one of Bush's lies - complete with footnotes to sources, etc. (and we weren't even required to do that).

When we were discussing it in class, we went through each of the subjects Shrub talked about, and when he mentioned how he'd talked about reducing gang violence - and putting Laura in charge - I asked why, then, had Bush CUT anti-gang programs by 44 percent, and got no response to THAT.

Anyway, when I got my essay/response back, I got a 100 with "Dem? Good work!" at the top.

But this is total crap!

10. How on earth could anyone conclude W is hurting the country: certainly not
the economy, the fiscal integrity of the Federal government, the value of the dollar, the environment, the world order and international law and institutions, the rule of law, constitutional protections, freedom of the press, the constitution including the separation of powers and the separation of church and state. Where do such students get the wild idea that the policies and actions of this Administration are hurting our country?

11. Jim Philips, you must live in Central Florida....
...well, this high school senior is obviously asking for trouble being right in the middle of neo-conservative hell. Maybe the Orlando Slantinal will have the story tomorrow. I have not heard about it.

27. Not very likely as the news worth reporting in the MSM of Central
...FL is about catching two school principals in a prostitution sting operation. Must make sure that morals are of the highest standard so that sexually frustrated and dysfunctional adults will make sure that no students go out-of-bounds with political free thinking!:wtf:

15. I'm so shocked that a FL school would do this, NOT!
In the proud Jeb Bush tradition of violating voting and civil rights, not to mention, election fraud, we now have teachers censoring motivated students. I don't care if it's too pro or too anti Bush, this sends a message. "Obey!" The teacher who did this should be ashamed.

Orange is DEFINTLY PURPLE. In fact Orange County was ALMOST split RIGHT DOWN THE MIDDLE on election.

26. Can't we get arrested for quoting Jefferson...(not in Virginia, however)
Even the Republicans worship him here! ...but when I look up at the ceiling of the Jefferson memorial and read the inscriptions chosen, they are absolutely revolutionary. I often wondered in our post-Patriot act when they'll start burning the entire work of Jefferson (indlucing the Declaration)?

19. My son was silenced during a political debate class in HS.
He was the only Dem/anti-bu$h debator. His ex-navy seal teacher told him that his opinions are not welcome in this forum and only those showing respect for the prez and his policies would be included in the debate.

Now what kind of a debate is that if everyone agrees on the same things?

Fucken Morans!

23. Isn't it just a school report...tone it down for whom? What is the
teacher afraid of - it is to be entered in a contest or read at graduation ceremonies. If not, what is the harm? The student can congratulate herself later in life when everyone finally comes to the conclusion she came to - that some time date in the future when people will become brave again. Some of us are scared like some of the Germans were.

Wish I could find the damned link! They put this kid in a bad spot, because if she does tone it down, she is compromising something that should not be compromised.

25. Just dawned on me - we should read what she wrote before we take
strong sides...she could have sworn her way through it and the request from the teacher could have been an understatement. I hope it is published on the internet.
