Protesters target U.S. Army recruiters at CMU

By Gabrielle Banks / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

About 13 anti-war protesters blocked off an Army Reserves recruiting table in Carnegie Mellon University's student union during the lunchtime rush yesterday.

Campus police officers responded to a call from the University Center about 45 minutes after the protesters had arrived, but made no arrests.

Members of Pittsburgh Organizing Group, including several CMU students and some high school students, stood in front of two recruiters at a folding table holding a banner that said "Resistance is Fertile."

1. Smell that? Can you smell it? Revolution's in the air.
Like the early smell of spring, the smell of revolution is rising. I don't mean armed revolt, I mean resistance and refusal to accept the status quo any longer.

3. Yup, there's a massive mindset shift in the works like with the
protestors at the Arnie event last month or whenever it was that the police didn't block or arrest.

9. Sweetheart. We have an army.
Except it's being occupied in an illegal war in Iraq. If we were not in Iraq, we would have plenty of soldiers to protect our country. THAT is the point. Also, could you tell me which country is planning on invading us and "taking us over?"

15. No, you're wrong there
What we need is a National Guard at home that is there to protect our country during times of extreme emergencies like Earthquakes, Riots, Hurricanes what not. There are no countries out there that have the capacity to invade us. If they are going to do anything destructive to our country it'll be quick hits like 9/11 or a Nuke to our west coast.

SO if we have another 9/11, our army can't do anything. In fact the first group to actually do anything would be our police, firefighters and emergency medical personal. And a republican congress refused to fund these groups for the necessary equipment to better response & safety for their work.

And if a nuke hits our coast, well, there isn't much we can do except pray for a speed & painless death for those who are living in the hot zone where it was hit. And there is only one country that has the ability to hit our country and that's North Korea, which Bush isn't doing a good job of dealing with.

We have an army and they're located in a country that didn't have WMDs or aided with 9/11. Instead of shister recruiting practices or laxed recruitment standards, what we need to do is end the war and let those soldiers serve at home where we need them.

If we want to increase our Army here at home, Bush only needs to go to the UN, admit that he made a mistake and ask for UN to help clean up the mistake that the USA started. The UN would then be the ones to work to get the oil fields flowing again (through bidded contracts open to all countries who help out with the UN Forces) and the profits from those oil fields would be kept IN Iraq where they can be used to help rebuild their destroyed country. By bringing in UN Peacekeeping troops, we can start sending our soldiers home. And by bringing our troops home I'm sure we'll see a sharp increase in recruitment since joining will no longer be a one-way ticket to Iraq.

20. No, the National Guard has history of being our countries...
home defense. Hell back during Vietnam the National Guard was the place to go to get out of the war (aka Bush and Quayle). Now our National Guard is stuck overseas for a job they weren't really trained to do.

YOu really should stick to school studies. I know you mean well, but you don't really have enough information on how the military works and why no one wants to join our army.

To be honest, if BUsh wasn't such a cocky asshole, we wouldn't have to worry about other countries wanting to attack and destroy us.

I felt so positive about what these students did at the army recruitment in the original photo. Then I read your post and realize that we still have kids out there who think the Army is some sort of cool PS2/Xbox game. I pray that in the next few years you'll grow out of that thinking and understand what a travesty Bush is doing to our country and especially those who were brave enough to serve and then lied to

10. Good, I hope that you sign up when you graduate
If you haven't seen Fahrenheit 9/11, ask your parents to rent a copy for you to watch. You'll understand about the shady recruitment practices especially towards minorities and lower income families. And joining the army now is a one-way ticket to Iraq which no one wants to do. That's why Army enlistment is down almost 30% because no one wants to fight this war.

We want more people like these young adults that help spread the truth about life in the Army. It's been documented enough that the Army does not hold up their end of the bargain when it comes to their promises of education and college for money. And god forbid if you're injured while serving, they definately do not stand up to their end of taking care of those who gave of themselves to serve.

To be honest, with recruiting down as much as it is, I hope that a draft comes through, especially if it's Charles Rangel's draft bill. Because a draft will start dragging children into war who probably wouldn't have served because of financial advantages they have in life. Maybe one they get drafted then the rest of America will recognize what a horrible war this is.

I'm glad to see that even in 8th grade you recognize the war is wrong. I'm not sure where you live, but I'm in urban Wilmington DE and I can assure you I've seen the stunts that the army does to try and recruit more 'disadvantaged' people into the army. You use to have to be a high school graduate and under the age of 35 to enlist. Now they've eliminated the diploma and increased the age to 39. And I've even read where you just to have completed up to 9th grade (although still an adult) in order to enlist.

As long as Bush has fresh bodies to ship off to war, this war will not end.

21. Maybe?
No, you said we need more people to enlist. Why not visit the army website and get on their mailing list so they can hit you up as soon as you turn 18 years old. We need more kids like you enlisting in the army who are all gung-ho to serve and ready to die for any cause given to us regardless of whether it's valid or not.

16. perhaps if the pretzeldent didn't misuse our army in fraudulent
wars to put money in his friends' pockets, we'd be just fine, eh?
or would you rather lose 7 army men a day fighting insurgents in a country that never attacked us?

I'm happy you're in 8th grade, but it helps to look at the entire picture.
