(4/25/05):

Teron Francis...was taken to (a) Bronx (New York, hospital)...on Monday complaining of a severe headache and toothache...

After...(Teron went)...into convulsions and became unconscious, he was hooked up to a respirator...(D)octors conducted a CAT-scan and told relatives that an infection had spread to his brain...On Wednesday, doctors told relatives he was brain dead...

New York State law empowers physicians to remove respirators from brain-dead patients after 24 hours...(A) State Supreme Court Justice...told about two dozen family members that the respirator would not be removed and that he had ordered an investigation into Teron's case. The relatives broke into applause...link to news story | link to thread

I'd tell Teron's relatives the same thing I would have told Terri Schiavo's--get a second opinion as to whether he's brain dead, and if it concurs, have enough class to allow the hospital to pull the plug.

(4/28/05):
Fight for Life Ends Today for Young Bronx Boy

...An independent doctor appointed by Judge Mckeon, talked to the family of Teron Francis and reconfirmed the diagnosis by Montefiore Hospital that the 13-year-old boy is brain dead...There was an injunction to keep the boy alive but now there's been a consensus.

...(The) (f)amily's (l)awyer (said): "He was polite, he was respectful of her...(W)hen he explained to her, her child's condition, she understood...I think if she would've been spoken to in this manner a week ago, I would have never been called."

Sounds like common sense prevailed (including mine). The Francis family has my deepest condolances as well as my highest admiration--THIS, President Mightymouse, is an example of "moral courage!"
