ROUGH 'Help Andy' letter from PDA
This isn't done yet, still getting edits etc. from PDA crew. I wanted to see if any of you have anything to add. Please don't forward until I call it final, and thanks.

===

A great friend of the activist community named Andy Stephenson needs our help. Andy has been a tireless fighter for election reform in America for years. He worked closely with the Black Box Voting organization, spent every waking moment traveling and speaking on the issue of electronic touch-screen voting machines, and even ran for Secretary of State in Washington on a platform based on this specific issue.

I remember meeting up with him last August in Seattle for a Rolling Thunder event. The day was dedicated to a variety of group conversations on topics ranging from the Iraq occupation to environmental protection to electronic voting and the upcoming election. Every gathering where Andy came to speak was packed, and he described in eerily prescient detail what eventually happened in Ohio and elsewhere during the November presidential election.

Several weeks ago, Andy was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He was recently told that he must undergo what is called a Whipple Procedure. This is a very serious surgery that few hospitals in America are skilled enough to perform well. Fortunately, some friends managed to get Andy a slot at Johns Hopkins Medical Center, one of the premier hospitals for this type of procedure. He is slated for the procedure in the second week of May.

Unfortunately, the hospital requires a $25,000 down-payment before they assent to doing the Whipple, and requires another $25,000 once the procedure is done. Andy Stephenson does not have health insurance; activists like Andy rarely do, because there is little money to be made in trying to do good. In this, Andy is like millions of other Americans who do not have health insurance and thus face financial ruin if they get sick.

What Andy Stephenson is going through right now is a perfect example of why Universal Health Care for all Americans is needed, and needed now. When you get sick, you should be able to get help, period. Our for-profit health care system is a betrayal of the most basic of human requirements: Care for those in need. The quality of health care available should not be based on how much money you have in the bank, or whether you are fortunate enough to work for a company that can itself afford to offer health coverage, or whether you have friends who can help you.

Andy’s friends have to date managed to raise about $7,000 to put towards the fee for his procedure. So much still remains to be done for him. Andy Stephenson is one of the main reasons why people have become aware of the gross flaws and potential for fraud that exists with the new corporate-owned electronic touch-screen voting machines. Even though he is sick, he is still speaking to whoever will listen, wherever they may be, to continue pressing this issue. He is one of the most dedicated people I have ever been privileged to know.

If you can, please give to the fund for Andy. You can do this electronically via Amazon’s PayPal process:

http://s1.amazon.com/exec/varzea/ts/my-pay-page/P2TRHRVBGX9KOX/102-6873839-9047353

If you prefer to donate via check outside the electronic process, please send to:

5. Here is arnheim's post with PayPal info
Some people seem to be having problems with Amazon.

=============

Andy Stephenson, election reform hero, needs your help. Andy Stephenson is an activist who has been fighting the BBVs for years now. His tireless efforts have helped so many people learn about black box voting and how dangerous it is to the country.

Andy has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and is scheduled for surgery at Johns Hopkins. Like many Americans, Andy has no health insurance and he desperately needs our help. The cancer was found early so his chances of recovery are great if he has the surgery now. Johns Hopkins requires the $25,000 for the surgery up front – something that any American would have difficulty complying with if asked.

Please read the truthout.org article about Andy’s situation: http://forum.truthout.org/blog/story/2005/2/24/84720/3496

If you are in any way able to contribute, please don't hesitate.

1) via USPS:
send a check or a money order to:
Andy Stephenson
P O Box 25624
Seattle, WA 98165-1124

2) via Paypal:
(You must have a Paypal account)
http://www.paypal.com /
After logging in, choose "Send Money" and
enter Andy's email address as the recipient
Andy_Stephenson@comcast.net

3) via Amazon
http://s1.amazon.com/exec/varzea/ts/my-pay-page/P2TRHRVBGX9KOX/102-6873839-9047353
Just enter the amount and click "pay now"

!!!IMPORTANT!!!
If you are sending something, please email Beth if you can so she can do the math.
Send your email to Beth at info@dougzilla.com

Thanks!

22. "Recipient Unable to Receive Payments" is the message I'm...
....getting from Amazon. In addition, the page states:

"We are not able to continue with this transaction because the recipient is unable to receive payments through the Amazon Honor System at this time. Please try again at a later time."

Whomever is managing this for Andy, it is also important to set the limit much higher. The current limit is $ 50.00 (that's what you are told prior to clicking through to make the charge to your credit card and getting the above message).

As soon as it's fixed, I'll be donating substantially more than $50.

Peace.

I hate to say that pancreatic cancer is almost incurable and most people diagnosed with it die very soon. It is probably the worst cancer there is.

I hope the Whipple procedure helps.

I'm sure DU can raise the money. I will give what I can.

31. Bev is a nasty little critter!
Fortunately for Andy _when_ we raise the money, he will be treated by the Jedi of Pancreatic cancer. JH has possibly the highest survival rate in the nation for this procedure.

I am personally confident that Andy has what it takes to perservere in expunging any ill effects from that nasty bitch, and looking forward to slipping over to B'more for a visit.

I'm wondering if his partner will have the means to be in town for the exorcism.

11. You are so right about universal healthcare.
People like Andy drop through the holes in the so-called "safety net" and get caught up in bureaucratic red tape. Trust me, when you're feeling sick, you don't feel like battling the system. I've been there; done that; bought the fuckin' T-shirt.

Please, if you can help Andy, do so. The illness is enough to worry about. I sent a bit through Paypal to Andy_Stephenson@comcast.net. I know we're all strapped for cash, but this is one to bite the bullet over, IMO.

Andy, I'm pulling for you! :D

that this procedure has a LENGTHY recovery.
It is probably the most invasive surgery known and sometimes the recovery is very tough.

39. There are MATCHING funds for tonight - and please PM sfexpat2000
when you donate - she is keeping track of the money for Andy. That goes for the matching fund for tonight and also for other days. He's got enough on his mind without counting up the running total and hoping there will be enough.

If you donate electronically or make a pledge tonight, there are MATCHING FUNDS UP TO $1000. This applies to PLEDGES, so if you intend to snail-mail the donation to Andy, it will still be counted for tonight's matching fund if you let sfexpat2000 know.
