. . .and they are expecting him to call in from the air. It should be said that Jennifer Wilbanks put her family through hell, by our anger should be directed at the press who totally sensationalized it. I wonder if there was not so much press overkill if the police would have put the resources that they have into the search.

when you equate sexual harassment with sex. Sexual harassment is about exercising power over, with very little to do with sex.

73. WoW! Snarky tonight aren't we?
I had no idea you took your TV shows so seriously.

Had the poster been talking about a real sexual harrassment event and not Law & Order - a TV Show (as in NOT REAL LIFE) - then I could see your point about my point being poorly made.

However, what I was doing was an attempt at humor, obviously it went right by you. Next time I will remember to label it with a disclaimer.

Here, does this meet your approval?

DISCLAIMER: The following is just a joke about a TV show and in no way construes the actual opinion of the poster should said situation involve real life persons. If it were an actual put down to people being sexually harrassed, you would have heard a supernova exploding near by.

That is also a joke. Humor has been known to be used on DU, so lighten up.

She has been living with her fiancee for over five years? Lies about being kidnapped, blames minority people for her false kidnapping and all they want to say is that she needs help and forgiveness? She can get help and she can be forgiven but she still needs to pay the penalty.

89. The bigger question is
would this have even been sensationalized if this woman had been a minority instead of white?

Not...one...whisper would have made it to CNN, Fox, or MSNBC. There is no more real news, just tabloid news.

These stories are no more than TV versions of the National Enquirer or World News and if I wanted to know more I'd buy them at the supermarket check-out.

I expect real, hard news from these people. Unfortunately, what we now get is pablum. There are very few real news people left.

Sigh!!! :(

92. Yup. NOT Funny. Good Point.
In the vietnam era they sang,

"Where have all the flowers gone? Long time passing"
"Where have all the flowers gone? Long time ago."
"Where have all the flowers gone? Young girls pick them every one."
"When will they ever learn? When will they ever learn?"

"Where have all the young girls gone...."
"Gone to soldiers every one.. when will they ever learn?"

"Where have all the soldiers gone?"

"Gone to graveyards everyone, when will they ever learn?"

Then with the advent of the war on reporters ... we should probably add a verse, but someone else will have to write it.... It's too hard to see through the tears these days when I think of how this administration is killing the Truth in every form.

I still can get over how NO ONE ever covered that female reporter in Iraq who was kidnapped with her 10 year old son. They killed her and let him go. Took him 2 days after she was murdered to get back home.

26 February 2005
Iraqi journalist found dead five days after she was kidnapped

Reporters Without Borders voiced "horror" today at the murder of Iraqi journalist Raeda Mohammed Wageh Wazzan of the regional public TV station Iraqiya, who was found dead on 25 February, five days after she and her son were kidnapped by masked gunmen in the centre of the northern city of Mosul.

"We are horrified by this vile murder, for which there is no justification, and we must stress yet again that journalists are neither belligerents nor bargaining chips," the press freedom organization said.

Reporters Without Borders added : "Our thoughts go out to Raeda Wazzan's family, especially her husband and son." Wazzan's 10-year-old son was released by her abductors after three days. It was her husband, Salim Saad-Allah, who announced on 26 February that the body of Wazzan, 40, had been found the previous day. She was shot in the head.

42. Yeah, what she did was dumb
but she must he under a lot of stress. We don't know her life or what is really going on.

They are now interviewing other people in the town and they are mad at her, etc. But, she probably had no idea our vulture-like press was going to pick up on this and post her personal life all over the place. She should have, but she didn't. Who knows what anyone would do if they are stressed out.

I agree with fuck CNN. They are actually running a poll for our Fellow Americans to call in about whether she should get in trouble or not, etc.

CNN is *still* running the story about this.

The fearless leader has shown the ability to cure people with all types of illnesses. They could have her with crutches and bandages, sitting next to the First Lady, and His Righteousness The President could heal her, likely with just a word. VP Cheney might want to do a bit of the laying on of the hands, as a preventative strike. I think we're on to something.

If she had just called her fiance and said she had cold feet, that would have been one thing. But she told the 911 operator that she had been kidnapped and gave details about the 'kidnappers' and their van. That's the crime.

39. The news stations are milking it for all it's worth
and it's ridiculous. The woman has to be embarassed out of her tree and obviously not too stable to have done that to her family and fiance.

40. Jennifer Wilbanks just said
how sorry she is for putting her family through all the pain her disappearance caused them and for the rest of us f**ks to mind our own business and to get a life.

46. Did she apologize to the Mexican American community?
For accusing a "Hispanic" male of abducting her?

A hundred years ago, that's all that would be needed for the posse, bloodhounds, and rope.

51. That's what has been reported
Edited on Sat Apr-30-05 09:44 PM by Ms. Clio
"In answer to the dispatcher's questions, Wilbanks gave detailed descriptions of her kidnappers, whom she described as a Hispanic man and a white woman. She said they were driving a blue van, whose license plate number she didn't get. She also told the dispatcher, before dissolving into sobs, that her abductors were armed with a small handgun."

54. OMG I didn't know that. That's awful!
Do you know how far she took that before she fessed up? I wonder if they can bring charges against her for making a false statement like that to police.

58. Here's a link that seems to answer that question
There were just a lot of holes in her story," Schultz, the Albuquerque police chief, told CNN. "The story kept getting retold and retold -- it was a little bit different each time ... If she'd been with somebody for four days, she would have had a little more information."

Eventually, "they asked her, 'Do we need to look for the blue van anymore?' and she said, 'No' ... It took several hours, but she did the right thing by telling the truth," said Ahrensfield, Albuquerque's police spokeswoman."

http://www2.cnn.com/2005/US/04/30/wilbanks.found/

She also claimed that these imaginary kidnappers, the Hispanic and his white girlfriend (nice double play on the racist theme) cut her hair before they released her.

63. Thanks for the link,
I've been in and out all day today and missed it all.

It's pretty bad that a 32 yr old would make up something so potentially damaging instead of just telling the truth. Looks like the Albuquerque police did a good job.

41. I've always wondered
how some stories become more important to the media than others.

Like Laci Peterson. How many husbands kill their wives every year and we never hear a snippet about them. Then all of a sudden this rich fuckwad from California becomes infamous overnight for doing the same thing hundreds of people do every year.

Then this bride runs away from home and becomes notorious immediately. How many husbands get cold feet the day before the wedding, run out to get some smokes and nobody ever sees them again?

44. There is some definite sexism here going on
and lots of women are killed by their loved ones in the USA.

47. Agreed, and they are interviewing people who were on
the airplane. It is sick. The anger should be directed at the news outlets, though.

I tried calling CNN to vent, but the lines are busy.

About the runaway bride (about which I know absolutely nothing), well, everything is just so wonderful in W's America, that's the most important story right now!

66. Even sicker -- they actually broke in on Larry King with "breaking"
news that a flight attendant had reported to the CNN reporter that she had spoken to her fiance and apparently the wedding is only postponed, not off.

I wondered if I was back in high school or something. It was so bizarre and unprofessional and ... just sick.

77. And the program of diversion and distraction continues to be successful
Turn your TV news off, it is an oxymoronic term. Who cares if some bride isn't going to get married, it is her business.

Meanwhile more people on both sides are dying in Iraq, and we are still faced with the evil of Bushco at home.

Eyes on the ball people, don't be fooled by this BS.

Wilbanks as a "victim". What about the terrified Hispanics in GA waiting on der Sturmtroopers to come after them? And the reverend that is speaking for the family what a nut job.
