Social security - More about killing SS or enriching corporations?
I had looked at the social security reform primarily as a way to destroy social security with out saying so. I had heard the argument about enriching the corporations, but I had not given it as much thought.

However, today it really hit me when I was talking to a person at work about it. She told me she was all for it because she "could" retire with millions of dollars and have a beach house and boats if the stocks performed super well whereas with social security she'd never be rich. That rich talk - the way they had her believing there was a chance in hell she'd do so well with investment in stocks... the greed. That's what made me truly realize what was going on.

Think about how much money will be dumped directly in to the big corporations if everyone in america started paying in to stocks instead of social security. I mean just think about it. The cash flow could be enormous. In a way with out wages we will be subsidizing the corporations. Every pay check... part of it would go back to a corporation. Wouldn't that make us something like serfs? I say yes, and I bet that's the goal. It's not getting rid of social security they want - it's to create serfs that subsidize the rich based on the lie it's "our money" and we can "do what we want with it".

Truly ironic and depressing. She kept repeating the talking point "It's our money we should get to keep it and do what we want with it". Great plan. Instead of giving it to the government and have reasonable security for the future you can give it to wal mart and wager your future on them.

1. There you go, play Corporate Lotto. You have to play to win.
Feed the machine. Cons work, based on greed.

2. Greed sells - and is the basis for the GOP - - but the motive for "reform"
Edited on Sat Apr-30-05 09:00 PM by ibid
of Social Security - in my opinion - is only to destroy it.

There is no special high greed level in this in the GOP - Wall Street does not get a huge amount of money (capital outflow for Gov borrowing is matched by inflow for the private accounts) - or at least no more greed than usual.

Killing Social Security is just killing a minor tax threat on the rich - a good thing by GOP standards - but not about enriching corporations or rich folk the way tax cuts for the rich or welfare for the rich via government contracts for "defense" are all about enriching corporations or rich folk.

3. I've been hearing similar
You know what it reminds me of? The people that play Powerball each week. They toss $10 each week down the hole because something great "might" happen.

4. Killing Social Security will enrich corporations.
Even without private accounts, losing the employer matching portion will create a boom to the bottom line. By which I mean CEO pay, of course.

That's been their objection to social security from day one.

6.35% of all gross salaries and wages is a HUGE amount.

5. Are you an Ella fan?
I own a couple of her albums, but at one time I had several dozen pristine old Columbia LPs from the 50s and 60s. Unemployed and needing money, I sold them to a collector.

6. Absolutely.
I think Ella embodies everything that's good about America. The convergence of race, culture, religion, and gender in one great pinnacle of accomplishment like nothing that ever existed on the planet before. If there's a god and god has a voice, it will sound a lot like Ella.

I put that picture in my sig line back in the primary 2004 season. Things could get pretty nasty, and I discovered that photo made me less likely to be snarky to people.

Sorry for the delayed response.
