I've come to the conclusion that the Freepers/Zell Miller are right...
The fact is that we aren't a national party anymore. We don't represent the national interest, instead, all we do is complain and whine and prevent the Repugs from enacting laws that help people. For example, look at the way that we tried to stop the Bankruptcy Reform Act, which protected the jobs of hundreds of thousands of Americans in the credit, collections, and reposession industries (repo men have to eat). And just look at the fuss we've kicked up over relaxing clean air and water standards, on which millions of jobs in both industry AND health care depend (hey, pediatric oncologists have to eat, too).

We talk about a woman's right to choose, but when the rubber meets the road, we're all about limiting choice. Our protests and terroristic threats against Ob-Gyns have made it all but impossible for a woman to decide to carry her fetus to term, and our forcing condoms and sex ed on students in school has created an atmosphere in which teens feel pressured to have sex, even desirous of sex before marriage, a situation that simply didn't exist during, say, the Eisenhower administration. The ruthless pursuit of so-called "gay equality" has ruined marriage in this country, rendering that sacred institution utterly devoid of meaning, to the point that innocent brides-to-be, like Jennifer Wilbanks, are so frightened they actually flee rather than be in a relationship that is similar to a gay relationship. Even long married folks are now divorcing in order to rid themselves of the taint of gay marriage.

Finally, we can't ignore the manner in which Democrats have obstructed and sabotaged the war on terror. Bad enough that all of the hijackers on the airplanes on 9/11 were Democrats, but the manner in which Democrats systematically alienated our allies virtually guaranteed that we would be forced to go it alone in Iraq. Why, if it wasn't for Tom Daschle's comments about "Old World Chocolate Makers" Western Europe would have gladly held hands with us as we went over the precipice. And let's not forget Hillary Clinton's provocative "Axis of Evil" speech in which she practically dared North Korea to show us all the nuclear weapons her husband had personally smuggled out of the White House and given to Kim Jong Il.

I'm not sure what to do to get the Democrat party back on track, but somehow, we have to restrain ourselves from running for any elected office, holding any press conferences, or being present for any votes whatsoever. Until we can figure out what has made us hate America so, and heal that sickness in the core of our party, we must trust the Republicans to lead the country. After all, the GOP is the LORD'S party.

3. Until recently, neither party was a national party.
Used to be, way back in the seventies and earlier, that there wasn't a national party. Rather, there were state parties and then there would be a completely new organization built every four years out of coordinating state parties, unions, chamber of commerce, whatever. Then the presidential election would be over and everyone went home.

Now, there is a permanent GOP apparatus, not entirely above ground, that works at a national level, uniting think tanks, the WH, congress, churches, and media along the same talking points. It's a permanent, discplined organization that exists for the purpose of a single message du jour and winning elections.

There isn't anything like it on the Dem side. Indeed, as the GOP has branched out into ostensibly non-party organizations like churches and think tanks and crazy ass foundations and media and brought them in line, the dems have lost unions, ethnic organizations, minority groups and others. Each elected leader, or unelected leader, is working from his or her own script and set of priorities. Ever notice who gets picked as "the liberal voice" on CNN? Why, whoever is available. And what does he say? Anything he likes.

A permanent, organized and disciplined apparatus is what the Dems need. Senators and congressment need to get into line. When there is one voice among the politicians, then NGOs will know where a democrat stands and what we offer. Until then, its a debating club.

35. Contrary to popular belief today, sex education was around
in the 50s. During my freshman year all the boys were herded into the auditorium for a 2-hour "special" in which we were shown graphic films of the consequences of unprotected sex (penises with venereal disease, etc: - it was quite gross). The principal & a coach talked about condoms & abstinence & took questions. And they DIDNT have to call parents for permission for their "child" to attend. All this was in small-town Indiana in 1955. Couldn't happen today - that coach would be fired no matter how many basketball games he'd won!
Also, the corner gas station was the main teen boy sex-info hangout. What we learned at 16 from the older grease monkeys would make a 25-year-old blush today!

30. What the Dems are to do.....
Today I had a very long protracted argument with the right-wing nutcase guitar player in the band I work with.

And after we were done, I had an epiphany: There's nothing to worry about. It's gonna suck for a few years, but the pendulum will swing back to the left. There's never been a political party that's tee'd up for devisive destruction like the current Republicans.

Any time you garner power through pandering to extremists, you cannot sustain it. Let's say they pull this nuclear option crap, and manage to pack the courts with Right-Wing morons who push through an anti-abortion amendment? They will alienate the majority. These clowns have had it both ways for many years - they've screamed and yelled in righteous indignation over abortion, pleasing the crap out of the evengelicals, without having to actually DO anything about abortion, because they didn't have the law or numbers to pull it off. Thereby avoiding the appearance to America of actually BEING extremists. But if they actually DO it - they're not the centrists they've been dishonestly portraying themselves as.

They BECOME the extremists, the GOP Civil War erupts, the party fragments, and the Dems get back into power again. And this time, with NO MINORITY FILIBUSTER to stop them,

Can you say, "Ladies and Gentlemen. the Gay Mexican Atheist Director of the New Free National Health Care System"? :)

it will swing the other way. Let's just hope that enough people get the message about what the RW has been up to so that the Dems can stay in power more than a term or two. We get in, get things fixed up, and then they get it back again and it all goes to hell again.

WHEN? HOW MUCH LONGER DO I HAVE TO PUT UP WITH THIS SHIT?!

I'm terrified of the damage these bastards are going to do to our civil liberties, our international standing, our economy, our environment, and the last tattered remnants of the New Deal before the American public finally awakens from their TV-induced coma and arises in anger.

43. Yep, we dems are evil!
Besides being evil, we ain't no fun. Look at the Clinton years.... no big war, no World Trade Center bombings, a decline in the war budget, wimpy laws passed (laws like allowing a women to take time to care for kids!), and all in all just not very exciting.

In fact.... BORING! Now we are finally again at war! Yaaay! We now drive on the road of financial disaster anxiously awaiting the end of that road; the boring environment thrown into the back seat as experiments with new pollutants take the drivers seat. I could go on but it's just too exciting!

Yeeehah! Plus, the fristians have the 'Rapture' up their sleeves! Now that's friggin exciting! "Any minute now, just you wait and see" they say. Man, I'm practically peeing my pants in anticipation!

But really makes me pee is the 'nukular' option. We finally have a leader who will use that red button! God didn't make that button to just sit there, he made it to be used and sure enough, GWB may just get the message from God one day: "It's time, George."

Thanks to the republicans, life is so much more exciting these days.
