Fort Knox losing 7,000 trainees but getting 5,000 permanent jobs. This was reported in my local paper today. Local authorities feel this is a win, win for Mitch McConnell's whoring. Nuthin new. What is interesting a few more glimmers into the BRAC report. Little gems -
- Don't mess with Texas - net gain of 6,150 new jobs, Maryland gain 9,293 and Georgia gains 7,423. Big losers are Connecticut, Maine and DC. (snip)
- Kindest cut- Concord, CA got its wish when the Pentagon selected the city's nearby Naval Weapons Station for closure - the city gets 12,800 acre facility, 35 miles outside of San Francisco could be transformed into 13,500 new homes with the value of the land $1 billion. (snip)
This next one is the best yet -
- A 'fort' with room service - As it has been since the first base-closing round in 1988, Fort DeRussy in Hawaii was spared. Perched on Waikiki Beach, where it remains the last undeveloped spot on the priciest piece of beachfront property in America, the 74-acre 'fort' is home to little more than a first-class, 814-room hotel. Though it could bring the always cash-hungry US military as much as $1 billion on the auction block , the hotel is considered a "quality of life" perk for the brass and other military personnel, who can vacation there at half-price rates. (Well, as long as the brass can have cut rate vacations :sarcasm:
- Bad day for history buffs - Historians and Civil War buffs will be sad to see an end to historic Fort Monroe in Hampton, VA. Home of the Army's Training and Doctrine Command, museum and picturesque grounds along the Chesapeake Bay. (snip)
