Newsweek APOLOGIZES for Koran story error
Edited on Sun May-15-05 04:37 PM by Bluebear
Next up: Abu Ghraib never happened, we apologize for the error.

==
NEW YORK - Newsweek magazine has apologized for errors in a story alleging that interrogators at the U.S. detention center in Guantanamo Bay desecrated the Quran, saying it would re-examine the accusations, which sparked outrage and deadly protests in Afghanistan.

Fifteen people died and scores were injured in violence between protesters and security forces, prompting U.S. promises to investigate the allegations.

"We regret that we got any part of our story wrong, and extend our sympathies to victims of the violence and to the U.S. soldiers caught in its midst," Newsweek Editor Mark Whitaker wrote in a note to readers.

In an issue dated May 9, the magazine reported that U.S. military investigators had found evidence that interrogators placed copies of Islam's holy book in washrooms and had flushed one down the toilet to get inmates to talk.

2. I don't understand
are they saying the story was wrong.....or that they're going to investigate to DETERMINE if the story was wrong.....

6. They are going to revisit if any part was wrong....
no doubt going over the details with the White House to see if the story was 'accurate'.

7. That's what I felt also
They are not saying the story is wrong, they are just saying sorry for printing the story before it has been certified as proven.

They saw the documents where the jailors wrote it was done, but since the military is saying it is still under investigation it is not a fact.

11. OMG!!! The story on Boston's WBZ radio "news"
was headlined "Newsweek admits the story about flushing the Koran was untrue"!!!!!!! UNTRUE!!!!!!

It wasn't until I got home and saw this thread that I learned the truth. I usuually have AAR on in the car, but when the weather is nasty, or once it gets dark, the signal isn't strong enough, so I have to turn it off.

Unfreaking real!!! UNTRUE, they said-----UNTRUE I tell you!

13. They reported the truth as Ksec said but just like Abu Ghraib
Edited on Sun May-15-05 05:21 PM by Tinoire
this is a truth that needs to be buried, classified and ignored so that we can lull in the secure feeling that our leadership is righteous.

Blame Newsweek. Blame Chomsky. Blame Seymour Hersch. Blame everyone except the people supporting, excusing and tolerating this evil war and its evil actions. That's the spirit America!

14. I would be more likely to believe Newsweek at this point.

The interrogators put fake menstrual blood on Islamic men's faces and don't let them wash it off! Why would they not put the Koran in the toilet? Why would they ever admit it? It seems like they're trying to avoid the Jihad that was promised earlier.

15. I'm sure they have been told to do this. My understanding that if George
did not appoligize in three days, the Muslims were going to declare Jihad on the USA.

I think this is the way of getting out of all the mess and the USA still save face.
