Anti-God Professors Protest Bush Appearance!
Evangelical college professors protest Bush visit
By Julia Duin
The Washington Times
Published May 17, 2005

WASHINGTON -- One-third of the professors at an evangelical Christian college in Grand Rapids, Mich., are taking out a large ad in a local newspaper Saturday to protest President Bush's commencement speech.

"As Christians, we are called to be peacemakers and to initiate war only as a last resort," the ad will say. "We believe your administration has launched an unjust and unjustified war in Iraq."

The 130 signatories, which include 20 staff members, work at Calvin College. Founded in 1876 as a school for pastors of the Christian Reformed Church, it now is one of the nation's flagship schools for a Christian liberal-arts education.

"No single political position should be identified with God's will," says the ad, which also chastises the president for "actions that favor the wealthy of our society and burden the poor."

2. *ahem* and the reasoning behind you posting "Anti-God" would be?
These are evangelical Christians. You're characterization of them as "Anti-God" is very suspicious.

Why did you do that?

9. The topic misrepresents the article.
I see no "sarcasm" indicated.

7. The point, I think, is that if you're anti-Bush (or his positions) >
you'll be thought of as anti-God.

Or at least, that's the absurd extention of the "for us or against us/divine presidency" thinking.

Congratulations to these people for trying to regain control of Christianity from the radical right but....

It's a bit troubling that in order to do so they must play the RW religion game. While their stance is noble, their own statement that "faith trumps politics"is erroneous. Faith is being manipulated by politics. I know, I know, this has been going on for centuries and the RW has made an art form of it. But is it not possible to attack this administration without making it a religious issue?

16. It sounds pretty evangelical to me
From their "history" page:

"Calvin College is a college of the Christian Reformed Church, a century-old denomination with a five-century-old heritage. It bases its whole faith and life on the sacred Scriptures, God's holy, inspired, infallible Word, and thus takes its stand with the churches which have their roots in the Protestant Reformation."

http://www.calvin.edu/about/history.htm

Evangelical is a devotion to the authority of the gospel, which the school seems to take pretty seriously, but I'm not from the area and don't really know anything about the school.

19. A self described "Christian" college is not necessairily evangelical
Evangelical = relating to or being a Christian church believing in personal conversion and the inerrancy of the Bible especially the 4 Gospels; "evangelical Christianity"; "an ultraconservative evangelical message"

The "Christian" culture of Calvin has not relied on typical evangelical activities, pastimes, or practives such as being "born again". It has adhered in the past to a Calvinist philosophy. While this visit by Bush may signify a change, Calvin has been the traditional bastion of conservative Christian Reformed ideals.

20. well, the part from their website talks about the bible as
the infallible word of god. Not all evangelicals are conservative. I've known a few that aren't, though I'd imagine that most are.
