in the Koran muslims were allowed to keep 4 wives was because the men kept on going off on Jihads and dying and so the population ratio of men:women was about 1:5, and obviously this would stop population growth completely and the vast majority of people would never get married.

It's just something that used to make sense and served a purpose but is now restrictive. There are similar examples in all religions.
