MissionNotAccomplished focuses on the "AfterDowningStreet" opportunity

MNA Day 1 was May 2 2005.

We urged everyone to stop and remember and reflect on how each of us could begin to inform our government that Bush’s illegal war on Iraq must stop.

By saying ‘Day 1,’ we simply recognized that a persistent effort, not merely an event, would be required.

Since May 2 2005, we have observed MNA Day 2 and 3 and, now, 4. Each of those days represents our acknowledgement that 22 additional US soldiers have been killed in Bush’s war on Iraq – a total of 67 and we have not yet reached the end of the month of May, 2005.

We have two nonviolent options to force an end to Bush’s war on Iraq.

One is economic – a concerted effort to halt work and diminish the flow of capital. For the moment, we do not have the mechanisms to mobilize those types of sanctions.

The other is legal – a concerted effort to demand that those whom we have elected do their duty and investigate, indict and prosecute Bush and the members of his administration who lied to the American public, deceived the international community, launched a pre-emptive attack on another Nation and has persisted in occupying that Nation.

Congressman Conyers and AfterDowningStreet.org have begun to mobilize our fellow citizens to move along that path.

Accordingly, MissionNotAccomplished will now focus all of its messaging on building support for Congressman Conyers’ efforts to have Bush respond to the questions he and 88 other members have asked regarding the recently released “Downing Street memo.”

The mechanisms we intend to use include monitoring for each report of the death of another US soldier in Iraq, and posting a comment in this (and subsequent) threads with information, to the extent available, about that soldier.

We request that as many of you as possible spread the word to all you know that another fellow citizen has been killed and that they should call, write, email their Congressional representatives and demand that Bush respond to the Conyers inquiry. In other words, we will memorialize each death by a surge of email, phone calls, faxes, postcards, and letters demanding Bush be accountable.

We will be posting additional suggestions as to how to expand the effort to force Bush to respond to Conyers and we encourage all of you to be creative and share your thoughts with us.

If we are able to reach millions, if we are able to help Congressman Conyers achieve and exceed the 100,000 signatures he is seeking then, if still necessary, we may be better positioned to begin organizing concerted economic consequences.

We certainly encourage leaders and citizens from around the world to consider what they can do, economically, to inform Bush and his neoconster gang that their occupation of Iraq must stop.

Peace.

MissionNotAccomplished will continue to urge all our fellow citizens to realize that we will have no ‘moral authority,’ no credibility as a democracy, no pretense to being a civilization until “We The People …” stop the atrocities and rectify the misery and destruction perpetrated on the citizens of Iraq by a pack of liars who just happen to be members of the Executive and Legislative branches of OUR Federal Government.

Peace and Thank you for your brave commitment to America and humanity.

June 6 2005.

That is 26 in less than 6 days.

All of you understand the implications. The corporate news media continue to suppress the truth and the implications of the truth.

All the more reason to extend the signatures on Congressman Conyers letter into the millions.

And the same applies to the associated MNA focused thread:

In the first 20 days of June, 56 American soldiers have perished in Iraq due to the premeditated, illegal and totally immoral actions of Bush, Blair and their fellow neoconster criminals.

Pace of troop deaths up in Iraq

More lost since hand-over than in the year before it

Page 1A

By Rick Jervis
USA TODAY

BAGHDAD — U.S. military deaths in Iraq increased by about one-third in the past year, even as Iraq established its own government and assumed more responsibility for battling the insurgency.

At least 882 U.S. troops died in the 12 months through Thursday, up from 657 in the preceding year, according to a USA TODAY analysis of Defense Department numbers. Iraqis assumed sovereignty a year ago this week, part of a U.S. strategy to lessen the visibility of U.S. troops and shift more responsibility for security to Iraq forces.

<clip>

“The insurgency is shifting all the time,” Maj. Gen. William Webster, commander of U.S. troops in Baghdad, said recently. “This is a learning enemy.”

These deaths and all the other deaths and horror of the war don't matter at all to the criminals who have stolen our country and now greedily prepare to steal still more from the rest of the world.

But we will MAKE them matter.

We have to be MORE than squeaking wheels in the silence of the compliant media, we have to SHOUT loud enough for the country, the world to hear! "Let Freedom Ring" indeed!

OUR VOICES WILL TAKE UP THE VOICES OF THE FALLEN and fight to prevent more killings and maimings and torture.

Scott, Joshua Michael Chief Warrant Officer (CW2) 28 U.S. Army

Maida, Mark A. Sergeant 22 U.S. Army

Brackenbury, Alan Lance Corporal 21 British Army

The five "NAME NOT RELEASED YET" fellow citizens, will have their names recorded here, as soon as they are available.

Who were you Mark and Alan and Joshua.

Who are your friends, now crushed; your families, now wrenching with the agony that your voice, your smile, all of you, will never be with them again.

Who are you 'name not yet released'? At this moment, a sister, a grandmother, a son, a ...., crumbles with the news of your loss.

We crumble, too. We never knew you, but we will not forget.

We will rebuild the republic in your honor.

We will never be spectators, again and watch our Constitution be trashed by evil men and women only concerned with their wealth and their power.

Until each citizen in a democracy accepts their responsibility for what happens, we will never have that democracy.

We must stop being spectators. We must hold our government accountable and prosecute those who have lied; those who have used the lives of Joshua, Alan, Mark and so many others merely to leverage their personal wealth and control.

Peace.

Norman Mailer

God's Chosen Envoy for America

In the wake of all the fluvial funereal obsequies that the media attached to Ronald Reagan's earthly departure, I felt obliged to remark that he had been the most overrated president in American history and the second most ignorant. Then I added -- how could I not? -- guess who is the most ignorant? Half the audience applauded; the other half were outraged and groaned in true patriotic pain. Since George W. is not only a horse's ass, but vain and platitudinous to boot, it can hardly escape us that he is also serving (with all due inner incandescence) as God's chosen envoy for America.

NBC 10 Image Lance Cpl. Holly Charette:

"Holly was a happy girl and loved by all of us and everyone she knew. Holly always looked at the positive side of everything. She wanted to become a Marine after 9-11. She wanted to do something for her country. And she was a very proud Marine. We are all missing a part of our hearts without her here," said Charlene Wheetman, Charette's aunt.

Iraq war claims first woman from Washington state

By Hal Bernton

Seattle Times staff reporter

Naval Reservist Regina Clark already had done two tours of active duty since 9/11, and friends thought it unfair that this single mom from Centralia should have to leave behind an 18-year-old son and serve again.

More at link:
http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2002349229_iraqmom27m.html

Let's 'frame this' OK:

A single mom dies because of the lies of a rich guy who went AWOL and is now committing heinous war crimes, trashing international law, and destroying our Bill of Rights.

Are We The People going to permit such actions to continue?

20. Ironic, on the day 2 y/o Colin Lovell is handed a flag, we learn that....
.... two "analysts" who clearly failed, have been amply rewarded each of the past three years with 'performance awards.'

Analysts Behind Iraq Intelligence Were Rewarded

By Walter Pincus
Washington Post Staff Writer
Saturday, May 28, 2005; Page A01

Two Army analysts whose work has been cited as part of a key intelligence failure on Iraq -- the claim that aluminum tubes sought by the Baghdad government were most likely meant for a nuclear weapons program rather than for rockets -- have received job performance awards in each of the past three years, officials said.

<snip>

The Army analysts concluded that it was highly unlikely that the tubes were for use in Iraq's rocket arsenal, a finding that bolstered a CIA contention that they were destined for nuclear centrifuges, which was in turn cited by the Bush administration as proof that Saddam Hussein was reconstituting Iraq's nuclear weapons program.

The problem, according to the commission, which cited the two analysts' work, is that they did not seek or obtain information available from the Energy Department and elsewhere showing that the tubes were indeed the type used for years as rocket-motor cases by Iraq's military. The panel said the finding represented a "serious lapse in analytic tradecraft" because the center's personnel "could and should have conducted a more exhaustive examination of the question."

<snip>

Washington lawyer Richard Ben-Veniste, who was a member of the Sept. 11 commission and whose government experience goes back to service as a Watergate prosecutor, said .... "It matters whether it was carelessness or tailoring , whether it was based on perceived wants of an administration or overt requests . . . It is time now to demonstrate the need for the integrity of the process," Ben-Veniste said.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/05/27/AR2005052701618.html

I'd say it is time for all those responsible for young Colin's fathers senseless death, and the senseless deaths of thousands of others - American, Iraqi, British, Japanese, ..... - to be held accountable for the remainder of their lives.

Peace.

DRAPING THE CASKET WITH THE
NATIONAL FLAG:
This custom began during the Napoleonic Wars (1796-1815). The dead carried from the field of battle on a caisson were covered with a flag. When the U.S. flag covers the casket, it is placed so the union blue field is at the head and over the left shoulder. It is not placed in the grave and is not allowed to touch the ground.

FLAGS FOR MILITARY FUNERALS:

Flags are provided for burial services of service members and veterans. The flag for one who dies on active duty is provided by one's branch of service. Flags for other veterans are provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs. The flag is presented to the next of kin at the end of the funeral, usually by the military chaplain. If there is no next of kin present, the flag may be presented to the veteran's close friend or associate if requested. The flags that have draped the caskets of the Unknown Soldiers are on display in the Memorial Display Room of the Memorial Amphitheater.

What drum can we bang to awaken the country to action?

Where The Mind is Without Fear

WHERE the mind is without fear and the head is held high
Where knowledge is free
Where the world has not been broken up into fragments
By narrow domestic walls
Where words come out from the depth of truth
Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection
Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way
Into the dreary desert sand of dead habit
Where the mind is led forward by thee
Into ever-widening thought and action
Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake.

PRACTICE OF FIRING THREE RIFLE
VOLLEYS OVER THE GRAVE:

This practice originated in the old custom of halting the fighting to remove the dead from the battlefield. Once each army had cleared its dead, it would fire three volleys to indicate that the dead had been cared for and that they were ready to go back to the fight. The fact that the firing party consists of seven riflemen, firing three volleys does not constitute a 21-gun salute.

"TAPS":

"Taps" is an American call, composed by the Union Army's Brigadier General Daniel Butterfield while in camp at Harrison's Landing, Virginia, in 1862. Butterfield wrote the call to replace the earlier "Tattoo" (lights out), which he thought too formal. The call soon became known as "Taps" because it was often tapped out on a drum in the absence of a bugler. Before the year was out, sounding Taps became the practice in both Northern and Southern camps. The call was officially adopted by the U.S. Army in 1874.

54. Just returned from an opportunity to ponder all of those reasons ...
.... that have been motivating me to be unrelenting in urging a concerted effort to extract our troops, in as orderly a manner as possible, from Bush's illegal occupation of Iraq and to hold accountable all those in the Bush administration, along with any collaborators in the Congress, for all their illegal actions since Bush began his illegal war on Iraq.

The consequence of removing myself from any source of current information and simply observing many folk doing the day to day activities that contribute to the wonderful life one can have in "America" served to strengthen my resolve to stop Bush, stop the atrocities, rebuild America.

It also strengthened my commitment to encourage every citizen to realize that if you are a spectator to your government then you are likely going to awaken one day and not like what you are seeing and have little if any voice in making it different. Your government will have become your boss and, throughout history, when that transition occurs the boss has typically been a ruthless tyrant.

So, I opened my email as my initial act upon re-entry and among much work related items I found two encouraging actions being taken, both of which provide the opportunity for many to participate. Since they are both relevant to our MNA focus on doing whatever we can to assist Congressman Conyers and his colleagues, I am posting a summary of both of them here.

Firstly, we have this new endeavor by PDA, United for Peace and Justice and Code Pink:

Stand and Be Heard

By William Rivers Pitt
Progressive Democrats of America

Next week, Progressive Democrats of America, in partnership with United for Peace and Justice and Code Pink, will initiate a nationwide campaign to demand that Congress and George W. Bush immediately and without delay implement and execute a plan to withdraw all U.S. forces from Iraq. This campaign will involve calls, letters, faxes and direct lobbying of members of Congress. This National Call-In Week will begin on May 31st and continue through June 3rd.

More on the plan and access to the petition:

http://www.pdamerica.org/articles/news/iraq-exit-action.php

Secondly, Amnesty International, as many of you may already know, has called for the following actions and they have listed specific individuals:

"During a statement on the release of it's annual report, Amnesty International President William Schultz called for the investigation, arrest, detention and prosecution of senior U.S. Officials - either by an Special Prosecutor or by foreign government prosecutors - who authored and authorized policies which lead to inhumane treatment and torture of persons held at Guantanemo, Abu Ghraib and Bagram Air Force Base. "The Government investigation must climb all the way to the top...", stated Schultz. Quoting former Secretary of State Colin Powell he went on to point out that permitting Torture by U.S. personnel "undermines the moral authority" and can allow such techniques to "spread like a virus" thruout the world."

America, a Symbol of . . .

By BOB HERBERT

This Memorial Day is not a good one for the country that was once the world's most brilliant beacon of freedom and justice.

State Department officials know better than anyone that the image of the United States has deteriorated around the world. The U.S. is now widely viewed as a brutal, bullying nation that countenances torture and operates hideous prison camps at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, and in other parts of the world - camps where inmates have been horribly abused, gruesomely humiliated and even killed.

<snip>

In much of the world, the image of the U.S. under Mr. Bush has morphed from an idealized champion of liberty to a heavily armed thug in camouflage fatigues. America is increasingly being seen as a dangerously arrogant military power that is due for a comeuppance. It will take a lot more than Karen Hughes to turn that around.

63. ".... as the meltdown of the failed US-led occupation continues."

May 30, 2005

“Things are getting worse by the day.”

Dahr Jamail's Iraq Dispatches

The mayhem continues in Iraq, with today at least 40 people dead, including five US soldiers in Diyala province as the meltdown of the failed US-led occupation continues.

Two suicide bombers detonated themselves after walking into a crowd of police officers in Hilla, south of Baghdad. The policemen were demonstrating outside the mayor’s office to protest a government decision to disband their Special Forces unit.

In yet another horrible PR move (or attempt to raise sectarian tensions?) by the US military the head of Iraq’s largest Sunni political party, Mohsen Abdul Hamid was detained from his home early this morning in western Baghdad. Of course his head was promptly bagged and his hands tied before he was taken away to be interrogated. His three sons were also detained with him. Stun bombs and bullets were said to be used during the raid, according to his wife.

It just so happens that his party, the Islamic Party, opposes the new US-backed security operation now engulfing Baghdad because they believe the security forces will disregard the rights of innocent Iraqis. Later today he was released and the military admitted it made a mistake.

65. "... provoke Saddam Hussein into giving the allies an excuse for war ..."
RAF bombing raids tried to goad Saddam into war

Michael Smith

THE RAF and US aircraft doubled the rate at which they were dropping bombs on Iraq in 2002 in an attempt to provoke Saddam Hussein into giving the allies an excuse for war, new evidence has shown.
The attacks were intensified from May, six months before the United Nations resolution that Tony Blair and Lord Goldsmith, the attorney-general, argued gave the coalition the legal basis for war. By the end of August the raids had become a full air offensive.

<snip>

The Ministry of Defence figures, provided in response to a question from Sir Menzies Campbell, the Liberal Democrat foreign affairs spokesman, show that despite the lack of an Iraqi reaction, the air war began anyway in September with a 100-plane raid.

The systematic targeting of Iraqi air defences appears to contradict Foreign Office legal guidance appended to the leaked briefing paper which said that the allied aircraft were only “entitled to use force in self-defence where such a use of force is a necessary and proportionate response to actual or imminent attack from Iraqi ground systems”.

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2087-1632566,00.html

Every soldier, every civilian serving in Iraq, and every Iraqi killed since ~ August 2002, has died because Bush and Blair lied and deceived their Nations and the world.

Bring them and their neoconster, fellow criminals to justice, NOW.

69. Conyers writes Rumsfeld re: "the smoking bullet in the smoking gun"
Edited on Tue May-31-05 05:58 PM by understandinglife
And, now, Congressman Conyers has written to Rumsfeld about that 'smoking bullet':

May 31, 2005

Honorable Donald H. Rumsfeld
Secretary of Defense
The Pentagon
1000 Defense, Suite 3E-880
Washington, DC 20301-1000

Dear Secretary Rumsfeld:

I write with an urgent and important request that you respond to a report in the London Times on Sunday, May 29, indicating that British and U.S. aircraft increased their rates of bombing in 2002 in order to provoke an excuse for war in Iraq. Much of this information is provided by the British Ministry of Defense in response to questions posed by Liberal Democrat Sir Menzies Campbell.

As you may know, on May 6, I wrote to President Bush, along with 88 of my colleagues in the House of Representatives, asking him to respond to allegations first revealed in the London Times on May 1, that the U.S. and British government had a secret plan to invade Iraq by the summer of 2002, well before the Bush Administration requested authorization for military action, from the U.S. Congress. A response is still pending on that request.

The allegations and factual assertions made in the May 29 London Times are in many respects just as serious as those made in the earlier article. They include the following:

"The RAF and U.S. aircraft doubled the rate at which they were dropping bombs in 2002 .... The attacks were intensified from May .... By the end of August the raids had become a full air offensive." Then British Defense Secretary Geoff Hoon reportedly told a British Cabinet Meeting in July, 2002, that by this time "the U.S. had already begun 'spikes of activity' to put pressure on the regime." The newly released information also appears to show that "the allies dropped twice as many bombs on Iraq in the second half of 2002 as they did during the whole of 2001."

According to the article, this increase in the rate of bombing was "an attempt to provoke Saddam Hussein into giving the allies an excuse for war." As I am sure you are aware, allied commander Tommy Franks has previously acknowledged the existence of increased military operations which he asserted were needed "to 'degrade' Iraqi air defenses in the same way as the air attacks that began the 1991 Gulf War."

The new information goes on to indicate that our military decided "on August 5, 2005, for a 'hybrid plan' in which a continuous air offensive and special forces would begin while the main ground force built up in Kuwait for a full-scale invasion." According to the article, "despite the lack of an Iraqi reaction, the air war began anyway in September with a 100-plane raid."

If true, these assertions indicate that not only had the Administration secretly and perhaps illegally agreed to go to war by the summer of 2002, but it also took specific and tangible military actions before asking Congress or the United Nations for authority, and absent an actual or imminent threat.

Thus, while there is considerable doubt as to whether the U.S. had authority to invade Iraq, given, among other things, the failure of the U.N. to issue a follow-up resolution to the November 8, 2002, Resolution 1441, it would seem that the act of engaging in military action via stepped up bombing raids that were not in response to an actual or imminent threat before our government asked for military authority would be even more problematic from a legal as well as a moral perspective.

As a result of these new disclosures, I would ask that you respond as promptly as possible to the following questions:

Did the RAF and the United States military increase the rate that they were dropping bombs in Iraq in 2002? If so, what was the extent and timing of the increase?

What was the justification for any such increase in the rate of bombing in Iraq at this time? Was this justification reviewed by legal authorities in the U.S.?

To the best of your knowledge, was there any agreement with any representative of the British government to engage in military action in Iraq before authority was sought from the Congress or the U.N.? If so, what was the nature of the agreement?

In connection with all of the above questions, please provide me with any memorandum, notes, minutes, documents, phone and other records, e-mails, computer files (including back-up records) or other material of any kind or nature concerning or relating thereto which are in the possession of or accessible by the Department of Defense.

I would encourage you to provide responses to these questions as promptly as possible, as they raise extremely grave and serious questions involving the credibility of our Administration and its constitutional responsibilities. In the interest of time, please feel free to forward me partial responses as they become available.

Sincerely,

John Conyers, Jr.

"The overwhelming response we received over the Memorial Day weekend from the Internet community to our Downing Street Letter to the President shows how many Americans want to get to the bottom of this huge and growing scandal," Conyers told RAW STORY. "I am hopeful that we can not only reach, but exceed our goal of 100,000 individuals asking the president to explain his conduct in this matter."

The 'memo,' official minutes of a 2002 meeting between British Prime Minister Tony Blair, members of British intelligence MI-6 and various members of the Bush administration, noted that MI-6 director Richard Dearlove said, “Bush wanted to remove Saddam, through military action, justified by the conjunction of terrorism and WMD. But the intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy.”

72. Depleted Uranium Bill Introduced into Congress
"I've been concerned about DU since veterans of the first Gulf War began to experience unexplained illnesses, commonly called 'Gulf War Syndrome' that remain mysterious," McDermott said.

McDermott added that there are reports from Iraqi doctors and others today of seemingly unexplained serious illnesses including higher rates of cancer and leukemia, and even birth defects.

"We pretended there was no problem with Agent Orange after Vietnam and later the Pentagon recanted, after untold suffering by veterans. I want to know scientifically if DU poses serious dangers to our soldiers and Iraqi civilians."

The Depleted Uranium Munitions Study Act of 2005 has 21 original co-sponsors, all Democrats, including: Reps. Charles Rangel, Pete Stark, Sherrod Brown, Peter DeFazio, Maurice Hinchey, Raul Grijalva, Jan Schakowsky, Robert Wexler, Sam Farr, Tammy Baldwin, Robert Andrews, Bob Filner, Jay Inslee, Jose Serrano, Lynn Woolsey, Earl Blumenauer, Bart Stupak, Mike Honda, Tom Udall, Barney Frank and Ed Markey.

75. Kick
W. H. Auden

Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.

Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message He Is Dead,
Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.

He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last for ever: I was wrong.

The stars are not wanted now: put out every one;
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun;
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood.
For nothing now can ever come to any good.

81. "The recent release of the Downing Street Memo provides new
and compelling evidence that the President of the United States has been actively engaged in a conspiracy to deceive and mislead the United States Congress and the American people about the basis for going to war against Iraq," attorney John C. Bonifaz recently wrote to Conyers. "If true, such conduct constitutes a High Crime under Article II, Section 4 of the United States Constitution: 'The President, Vice President, and all civil officers of the United States shall be removed from office on impeachment for, and conviction of, treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors.'"
snip--

Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution gives Congress the sole power to declare war -- and the argument can be made that White House deception in the lead-up to the invasion of Iraq amounted to a criminal assault on that constitutional provision. But "high crimes and misdemeanors" is a very general term. And history tells us that in Washington's pivotal matrix of media and politics, crimes of war have rarely even registered on the impeachment scale.

In 1974, President Nixon avoided impeachment only by resigning soon after the Judiciary Committee, by a 27-11 vote, approved a recommendation that the full House impeach him for obstruction of justice in the Watergate scandal. Only 12 members of the committee voted to include Nixon's illegal bombing of Cambodia -- and his lies about that bombing -- among the articles of impeachment.

snip---
Another war-related impeachment effort came in response to the Iran-Contra scandal. You wouldn't have known it from media coverage or congressional debate, but the Reagan administration's Iran-Contra maneuvers were part of a Washington-driven war that enabled the U.S.-backed Contra guerrillas to terrorize Nicaraguan civilians, killing thousands in the process. When Rep. Henry Gonzalez, a Democrat from Texas, pushed for impeachment of President Reagan (and, for good measure, Vice President George H. W. Bush) in 1987, he stood virtually alone on Capitol Hill.

Gonzalez was back on high moral ground the day before the first President Bush launched the Gulf War. On Jan. 16, 1991, the maverick Democrat stood on the House floor and announced he was introducing a resolution with five impeachment charges against Bush. The National Journal reported: "Among the constitutional violations Bush committed, according to Gonzalez, were commanding a volunteer military whose 'soldiers in the Middle East are overwhelmingly poor white, black and Mexican-American or Hispanic-American,' in violation of the equal protection clause, and 'bribing, intimidating and threatening' members of the United Nations Security Council 'to support belligerent acts against Iraq,' in violation of the U.N. charter."

In the past, attempts to impeach presidents for war crimes have sunk like a stone in the Potomac.

*If this time is going to be different, we need to get to work -- organizing around the country -- making the case for a thorough public inquiry and creating a groundswell that emerges as a powerful force from the grassroots. Only a massive movement will be strong enough to push over the media obstacles and drag politicians into a real debate about presidential war crimes and the appropriate constitutional punishment.*

82. 765 dead includes 66 U.S. military personnel
Casualties From Iraq Insurgency Up in May

By BUSHRA JUHI
Associated Press Writer

June 1, 2005, 1:27 PM EDT

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Iraqi civilian deaths in May from the insurgency increased nearly a third from the previous month, a Health Ministry official said Wednesday.

Separately, an Interior Ministry official said 151 police were killed in May, compared with 86 in April, up 75 percent. He added that at least 325 policemen were wounded in May, compared with 131 in April.

Dr. Sabah al-Araji of the Health Ministry said 434 civilians were killed in May, up from 299 killed in April.

Some 775 civilians also were wounded last month, compared with 598 in April, al-Araji said. The figures were based on people's identity cards and other documentation.

A Defense Ministry official said 85 Iraqi soldiers were killed in May, compared with 40 in April. Another 79 soldiers were wounded, compared with 63 in April, he said.

A separate count by The Associated Press since April 28 puts the number of slain Iraqi civilians and security personnel, as well as American troops, at 765, with 261 insurgents killed. The figure of 765 dead includes 66 U.S. military personnel, two British soldiers and two U.S. contractors killed in insurgent-related violence.

88. Herbert: "I can't think of a better time to resurrect the Watergate saga."

June 2, 2005

Truth and Deceit
By BOB HERBERT

When he accepted the Republican nomination for president in 1968, Richard Nixon said, "Let us begin by committing ourselves to the truth - to see it as it is, and tell it like it is - to find the truth, to speak the truth, and to live the truth."

<snip>

Now, with George W. Bush in charge, the nation is mired in yet another tragic period marked by incompetence, duplicity, bad faith and outright lies coming once again from the very top of the government. Just last month we had the disclosure of a previously secret British government memorandum that offered further confirmation that the American public and the world were spoon-fed bogus information by the Bush administration in the run-up to the invasion of Iraq.

<snip>

Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon, drunk with power and insufficiently restrained, took the nation on hair-raising journeys that were as unnecessary as they were destructive. Now, in the first years of the 21st century, George W. Bush is doing the same.

<snip>

Congress and an aggressive press ultimately played crucial roles in bringing the truth about Vietnam and Watergate to light.

A similar challenge exists today. We'll see how it plays out.

90. Significant update from Congressman Conyers - 94 Members have signed
For my part, I am recirculating the letter to the President from Congress to my Congressional colleagues on Monday to give them another opportunity to sign on. Many who missed the opportunity to sign on the first time around have contacted me about doing so.

I have already sent one additional letter to the President adding several names and requesting that they be considered as original signatories. I have attached an updated list below of members who have signed on thus far.

This is by far the most important issue we are faced with. The most serious matter for the Congress and the President is the decision to go to war. It is the sole constitutional responsibility of Congress to decide whether to declare war. The President has a constitutional responsibility to be straightforward and candid with the Congress in providing it with the information it needs to evaluate the case for war. If that decision is skewed or corrupted by false or misleading information, it raises the most serious Constitutional questions and substantial issues about abuse of power.

The tragic reality is that over 1600 of our men and women in uniform are dead in a war that was entered into under false premises. Tens of thousands have been severely injured. Many more innocent Iraqis have been killed or injured as well.

If, as the Downing Street Minutes appear to clearly indicate, the falsehoods that led us into war were deliberate manipulations of the public and Congress, we deserve to know and we deserve answers. More importantly, we need to hold this President accountable for a very grave abuse of power.

American intelligence officers are reporting that some of the insurgents in Iraq are using recent-model Beretta 92 pistols, with a twist:

These guns are probably from the Mossad or the CIA, or both. What we're seeing in Iraq is a national resistance against the American occupation, a resistance which is directed at the American troops and

In fact, the United States has become a major market in side arms, because regulations governing the sale of handguns allow wholesalers to purchase very large quantities of weapons. The only difference is the price. The U.S. Marines pay $263 for a Beretta 92, but in Falluja, the going rate is $850 dollars.

The process would certainly be revealing. Congress could subpoena Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, Gen. Richard Myers, Gen.Tommy Franks and all of the military commanders and pilots involved with the no-fly zone bombings going back into the late 1990s. What were their orders, both given and received? In those answers might lie a case for impeachment.

http://www.recoveringliberal.com
(scroll to 5.31.05)

In perhaps one of the largest turnarounds in modern political history, only six months after winning reelection, Bush has apparently squandered his mandate and now finds himself a lame duck, his powerful political capitol spent. Yes, dear readers, America is finally on to the man and it is doubtful that his presidency will survive the next two years.

So unlikely is his political survival that we here at the RECOVERING LIBERAL feel completely comfortable in beginning what amounts to as a countdown to IMPEACHMENT (Drum Roll Please!).

And what a lovely impeachment it will be, televised and tivo'd, and commented on by AL and Randi at AIR AMERICA while being dutifully dissected by our brothers and sisters in the BLOGGING COMMUNITY Including: BLONDESENSE, AMERICAblog, CROOKS AND LIARS, DAILY KOS, and of course here in the red, white and blue pages of the LIB.

The United States cannot simultaneously claim that it "promotes freedom around the world" while detaining tens of thousands at Guantánamo Bay, Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan and in Iraq and other locations without charge or trial and allowing those civilian and military officials responsible for orchestrating a systematic policy of torture to escape accountability.

Instead of attacking us, President Bush should insist upon a truly thorough, independent investigation of those who tried to circumvent global prohibitions on torture, and he should open all detention centers to scrutiny by independent human rights groups.

Only then will the world be able to judge whether it is Amnesty International or the president whose perspective deserves to be called "absurd."

Everyone, focus. Those words are in a report from CBSNews entitled "Torture in the US Gulag"!

Specifically, they continue:

Bush may find Amnesty's charges "absurd," but the debate has already moved from whether the United States is a purveyor of torture to what to do about it. Slowly, instruments of legality and due process, within and outside the United States, are encircling US policy.

.... said David L. Phillips, a former State Department consultant who worked on Iraq planning but quit in frustration in 2003 and has written a book called "Losing Iraq: Inside the Postwar Reconstruction Fiasco." "I have no doubt that they genuinely think that Iraq is a smashing success and a milestone in their forward freedom strategy. But if you ask Iraqis, they have a different opinion."

Phillips added that U.S. officials keep pointing to landmarks such as the January elections as turning points but "at no point have any of these milestones proven to be breakthroughs."

Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari last week lobbied Cheney and others for a more assertive U.S. military approach in Iraq, as well as for more help meeting the fall deadline for writing and approving a constitution. But even that carries risks. "Heavy-handed meddling by the Bush administration only undermines Iraq's new political leaders," Phillips said.

111. Conyers: "That sounds like deliberate deception to me."
Edited on Mon Jun-06-05 11:41 AM by understandinglife

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/theblog/archive/john-conyers/mens-rea-and-wmd_2145.html

06.05.2005 Rep. John Conyers

Mens Rea and WMD

We have reached a point where all but the most delusional enthusiasts of the Iraq war have now acknowledged that Iraq did not possess weapons of mass destruction at the time of the U.S. invasion and likely for over a decade preceding the war. Fox News and the President were slow to acknowledge this fact, but now have.

Unfortunately, it seems this rare consensus has lulled many into failing to ask the follow-up question: why were the President and other high-ranking administration officials so definitive in their statements that Iraq possessed WMD? This question is not of a merely historical significance: we deserve to know whether these statements were the result of a "massive intelligence failure" as some have contended or a deliberate deception of the Congress and the American people.

<snip>

Thus, absent any contradictory evidence, in the past two weeks alone (leaving out the reports of the last three years), we have a pretty clear pattern. This Administration had a cover story, namely that a clear and present danger to the United States was posed by Iraq's WMD, for something they knew they wanted to do: go to war with Iraq. Those who brought forward the weight of evidence disputing these claims were first ignored and later punished. Those who assisted in the cover story were rewarded.

Sounds like the intelligence and facts were being "fixed" around the policy, as the Downing Street Minutes claim. That sounds like deliberate deception to me.

120. Solomon: From Watergate to Downing Street -- Lying for War
From Watergate to Downing Street -- Lying for War

By Norman Solomon

http://www.truthout.org/docs_2005/060605L.shtml

You wouldn't know it from the media focus on Deep Throat last week, but the lies that Richard Nixon told about the Watergate break-in were part of his standard duplicity for the Vietnam War. It wasn't just that the Nixon administration engaged in secret illegal actions against a wide range of peace advocates -- including antiwar candidate George McGovern, the Democratic presidential nominee in 1972. Deception was always central to Nixon's war policy. Thirty-three years after Watergate, echoes of his fervent lies for war can be heard from George W. Bush.

From the outset, President Nixon falsely claimed to be seeking an end to the war. "I know that peace does not come through wishing for it -- that there is no substitute for days and even years of patient and prolonged diplomacy," he declared in his first inaugural address. The great independent journalist I.F. Stone commented days later, "It's easier to make war when you talk peace."

<snip>

The memo (Downing street minutes) makes clear that President Bush was lying when he publicly kept claiming that he hadn't decided yet whether to order an invasion of Iraq. Bush's actual policy was to launch the war, no matter what. In addition, the memo said, at the top of the administration in Washington "the intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy."

Like Richard Nixon, the current president insists that he wants peace. And, in a twisted sense, he does. As the Prussian general Karl von Clausewitz remarked two centuries ago: "A conqueror is always a lover of peace."

Conquerers are also quite willing to do the following to their own, as well as to those they destroy.

131. False freedom is very expensive. By Cindy Sheehan
False freedom is very expensive.

By Cindy Sheehan
http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article9069.htm
06/06/05 "ICH" - - For years, Saddam was one of our government’s propped up and militarily supported puppets. Many people have seen the famous footage of Donald Rumsfeld shaking hands with Saddam. I suppose the two are smiling so big for the cameras because they are kindred spirits. After all of the hand-shaking and weapon brokering, when did Saddam become such a bad guy to Bush, Cheney, Halliburton and Co.? (Insert your favorite reason here).

During the Clinton regime the US-UN led sanctions against Iraq and the weekly bombing raids killed tens of thousands of innocent people in Iraq. Many of them were children, but since one of her children didn’t have to be sacrificed to the homicidal war machine, Madeline Albright, thinks the slaughter during the “halcyon” Clinton years was “worth it.” More lies.

Anyone with even a rudimentary understanding of current events understands that this invasion / occupation of Iraq was not about Saddam being a “bad guy.” If that logic is used, then how many innocent Iraqi people have to die before the citizens of America wake up and know that our government is a “bad guy?” We also know that Iraq was not about WMD’s. They weren’t there and they weren’t going to be there for at least a decade, by all reports. Another reason, so wispy and more difficult to disprove, is that America invaded Iraq to bring freedom and democracy to the Iraqi people. When one tries to dispute this particular deception, one is accused of being unpatriotic or hating freedom. Even though correct, the statement “Freedom isn’t Free” is very insulting to me. False freedom is very expensive. Fake freedom costs over one billion of our tax dollars a week; phony freedom has cost the Iraqi people tens of thousands of innocent lives; fanciful freedom has meant the destruction of a country and its infrastructure.. Tragically, this fabricated notion of freedom and democracy cost me far more than I was willing to pay: the life of my son, Casey. The Lie of Historic Proportions also cost me my peace of mind, I do not feel free and I do not feel like I live in a democracy.

One of the other great deceits that is being perpetuated on the American public and the world is that this occupation is to fight terrorism: If we don’t fight terrorism in Iraq then we will have to fight it “on our streets.” In fact, terrorist attacks have skyrocketed in Iraq and all over the world. So much so, that the State Department has stopped compiling the statistics and quit issuing the yearly terrorism report. I guess if one doesn’t write a report, then terrorism doesn’t exist? All of Casey’s commendations say that he was killed in the “GWOT” the Global War on Terrorism. I agree with most of GWOT, except that Casey was killed in the Global War Of Terrorism waged on the world and its own citizens by the biggest terrorist outfit in the world: George and his destructive Neo-con cabal.

The evidence is overwhelming, compelling, and alarming that George and his indecent bandits traitorously had intelligence fabricated to fit their goal of invading Iraq. The criminals foisted a Lie of Historic Proportions on the world. It was clear to many of us more aware people that George, Condi, Rummy, the two Dicks: Cheney and Perle, Wolfie, and most effectively and treacherously, Colin Powell, lied their brains out before the invasion. The world was even shown where the WMD’S were on the map.. We were told that the “smoking gun” could come at any time in the form of a “mushroom cloud” or a cloud of toxic biological or chemical weapons. Does anyone remember duct tape and plastic sheeting?

Finally, the side of peace, truth and justice has our own smoking gun and it is burning our hands. It is the so-called Downing Street Memo dated 23, July 2002, (almost 8 months before the invasion) that states that military action (against Iraq) is now seen as “inevitable.” The memo further states that: “Bush wanted to remove Saddam through military action”, justified by the conjunction of “terrorism and WMD’s..” The most damning thing to George in the memo is where the British intelligence officer who wrote the memo claims that the intelligence to base Great Britain and the US staging a devastating invasion on Iraq was being “fixed around the policy.” Now, after over three years of relentless propaganda, it is difficult to distinguish the proven lies from the new “truth:” that this occupation is bringing freedom and democracy to the people of Iraq.

Casey took an oath to protect the US from all enemies “foreign and domestic.” He was sent to occupy and die in a foreign country that was no threat to the USA. However, the biggest threat to our safety, humanity, and our way of life in America are George and his cronies. Congress made a Mistake of Historic Proportions and waived its Constitutional responsibility to declare war. It is time for the House to make up for that mistake and introduce Articles of Impeachment against the murderous thugs who have caused so much mindless mayhem. It is time for Congress to re-validate itself by holding a hearing about the Downing Street Memo. The reader can help by going onto www.AfterDowningStreet.org and signing a petition to Rep. John Conyers so he will know that the American people are behind him to convene an investigation in the House Judiciary Committee. You can also write your Congressional Representative to help push the inquiry.

It is time to put partisan politics behind us to do what is correct for once and reclaim America’s humanity. It is time for Congress and the American people to work together in peace and justice to rid our country of the stench of greed, hypocrisy, and unnecessary suffering that permeates our White House and our halls of Congress. It is time to hold someone accountable for the carnage and devastation that has been caused. As a matter of fact, it is past time, but it is not too late.

135. John Locke: from "The Second Treatise of Civil Government 1690"

"That the aggressor, who puts himself into the state of war with another, and unjustly invades another man's right, can, by such an unjust war, never come to have a right over the conquered, will be easily agreed by all men, who will not think that robbers and pirates have a right of empire over whomsoever they have force enough to master, or that men are bound by promises which unlawful force extorts from them.

Should a robber break into my house, and, with a dagger at my throat, make me seal deeds to convey my estate to him, would this give him any title? Just such a title by his sword has an unjust conqueror who forces me into submission. The injury and the crime is equal, whether committed by the wearer of a crown or some petty villain.

The title of the offender and the number of his followers make no difference in the offence, unless it be to aggravate it. The only difference is, great robbers punish little ones to keep them in their obedience; but the great ones are rewarded with laurels and triumphs, because they are too big for the weak hands of justice in this world, and have the power in their own possession which should punish offenders."

Thank you for posting these insights of Locke. Indeed, ..."great robbers punish little ones to keep them in their obedience...," but even 'great robbers' falter and either commit suicide, are lynched, or, preferably, are brought peacefully before a legitimate court and held to justice.

We must do all we can to ensure the latter is what Bush and the neoconsters experience - peaceful application of justice. We must stop them from further destruction of "America" and civilization.

177. sixteen paths of thought for the 16th of June 2005

The feeling of patriotism - It is an immoral feeling because, instead of confessing himself a son of God . . . or even a free man guided by his own reason, each man under the influence of patriotism confesses himself the son of his fatherland and the slave of his government, and commits actions contrary to his reason and conscience.

- Leo Tolstoy, Patriotism and Government

The mass of mankind has not been born with saddles on their backs, nor a favored few to ride them.

- Thomas Jefferson

Yes, we did produce a near-perfect republic. But will they keep it? Or will they, in the enjoyment of plenty, lose the memory of freedom? Material abundance without character is the path of destruction.

- Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826), US Founding Father, drafted the Declaration of Independence, 3rd US President.

Confronted with such a tight regulation, can man pretend to be free because the tyranny he is subjected to derives from the law? Of course, the legal power is not called "tyranny" since it appears to be established by the general will in the common interest, and since, in any event, occurrences of arbitrary power are infrequent. But a master's equity does not mean that his subjects are not slaves. ... And when their servitude lasts and their thoughts follow their behavior, the state becomes totalitarian and subjection is complete. Since it is legal servitude, the regime is still said to be democratic. Such is the hypocrisy of political language.

And what sort of philosophical doctrine is this -- that numbers confer unlimited rights, that they take from some persons all rights over themselves, and vest these rights in others. ... How, then, can the rights of three men exceed the rights of two men?

ALLIANCE, n. In international politics, the union of two thieves who have their hands so deeply inserted in each other's pockets that they cannot separately plunder a third.

- Ambrose Bierce

As I write, highly civilized human beings are flying overhead trying to kill me. They do not feel any enmity against me as an individual, nor I against them. They are only doing their duty, as the saying goes. Most of them, I have no doubt, are kind-hearted law-abiding men who would never dream of committing murder in private life. On the other hand, if one of them succeeds in blowing me to pieces with a well-placed bomb, he will never sleep any worse for it. He is serving his country, which has the power to absolve him from evil.

- George Orwell: London. UK. 1941.

They could be made to accept the most flagrant violations of reality, because they never fully grasped the enormity of what was demanded of them, and were not sufficiently interested in public events to notice what was happening.

- George Orwell

Political language. . . is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind.

- George Orwell

The nationalist not only does not disapprove of atrocities committed by his own side, but he has a remarkable capacity for not even hearing about them.

- George Orwell

The American system is the most ingenious system of control in world history. With a country so rich in natural resources, talent and labour power the system can afford to distribute just enough wealth to just enough people to limit discontent to a troublesome minority. It is a country so powerful, so big, so pleasing to so many of its citizens that it can afford to give freedom of dissent to the small number who are not pleased. There is no system of control with more openings, apertures, flexibilities, rewards for the chosen.

<…> There is none that disperses its control more complexly through the voting system, the work situation, the church, the family, the school, the mass media – none more successful in mollifying opposition with reforms, isolating people from one another, creating patriotic loyalty.

- Howard Zinn, from A People’s History of the United States, first published 1981

There is no flag large enough to cover the shame of killing innocent people for a purpose which is unattainable.

- U.S. historian Howard Zinn, 1993

No "terrorist" gene is known to exist or is likely to be found... Surely the(y), and their supporters were afflicted by something that caused their metamorphosis from normal human beings capable of gentleness and affection into desperate, maddened, fiends with nothing but murder in their hearts and minds. What was that? Simple logic says that we must go to the roots of terror. Only a fool can believe that the services of a suicidal terrorist can be purchased, or that they can be bred at will anywhere.

- Ouch Borith: Permanent Representative Of The Kingdom Of Cambodia To The UN: 10/03/2001

In order to rally people, governments need enemies. They want us to be afraid, to hate, so we will rally behind them. And if they do not have a real enemy, they will invent one in order to mobilize us.

- Thich Nhat Hanh, Vietnamese monk, activist and writer

The War Prayer

by Mark Twain

"O Lord our Father, our young patriots, idols of our hearts, go forth to battle -- be Thou near them! With them -- in spirit -- we also go forth from the sweet peace of our beloved firesides to smite the foe. O Lord our God, help us to tear their soldiers to bloody shreds with our shells; help us to cover their smiling fields with the pale forms of their patriot dead; help us to drown the thunder of the guns with the shrieks of their wounded, writhing in pain; help us to lay waste their humble homes with a hurricane of fire; help us to wring the hearts of their unoffending widows with unavailing grief; help us to turn them out roofless with little children to wander unfriended the wastes of their desolated land in rags and hunger and thirst, sports of the sun flames of summer and the icy winds of winter, broken in spirit, worn with travail, imploring Thee for the refuge of the grave and denied it -- for our sakes who adore Thee, Lord, blast their hopes, blight their lives, protract their bitter pilgrimage, make heavy their steps, water their way with their tears, stain the white snow with the blood of their wounded feet! We ask it, in the spirit of love, of Him Who is the Source of Love, and Who is the ever-faithful refuge and friend of all that are sore beset and seek His aid with humble and contrite hearts. Amen."

(*After a pause.*) "Ye have prayed it; if ye still desire it, speak! The messenger of the Most High waits!"

Throughout history, it has been the inaction of those who could have acted; the indifference of those who should have known better; the silence of the voice of justice when it mattered most; that has made it possible for evil to triumph.

- Haile Selassie

200. “Dad To My Honorable Son” 15 June 2005
http://www.albasrah.net/en_articles_2005/0605/GI-Special-3B6-1Dad-To-My-Honorable-Son.htm

From: Jack McLamb, Ret.

To: Jack McLamb, Major, US Army

Sent: Wednesday, June 15, 2005 10:12 AM

Subject: Dad to my honorable son

You probably already know this history son, but it is a most important history every soldier should know.

At 17 years of age the government told me that I should go to Vietnam and "kill little oriental people to save our nation and it's freedoms for all my countrymen." It was a lie then....as it is today in Afghanistan, Iraq, and it will be a lie when we are in Iran, Syria, Lebanon, etc., etc..

One of my favorite quotes is H.L. Mencken’s - "To die for an idea is unquestionably noble, be how much more noble it would be if men died for ideas that were true."

I pray that one day we soldiers will once again serve, and if need be die, for ideas that are true.

Son, I am proud of you for your earnest service and dedication to our nation and it's people.

Love and prayers,

Dad

Peace.

224. "Some were little more than children when they signed up for the armed ...
... forces, like Ramona Valdez, who grew up in the Bronx and was just 17 when she joined the Marines. She was one of six service members, including four women, who were killed when a suicide bomber struck their convoy in Falluja last week.

Corporal Valdez wasn't even old enough to legally drink in New York. She died four days shy of her 21st birthday.

On July 2, 2003, with evidence mounting that U.S. troop strength in Iraq was inadequate, Mr. Bush told reporters at the White House, "There are some who feel that the conditions are such that they can attack us there. My answer is, Bring 'em on."

It was an immature display of street-corner machismo that appalled people familiar with the agonizing ordeals of combat. Senator Frank Lautenberg, a New Jersey Democrat, was quoted in The Washington Post as saying: "I am shaking my head in disbelief. When I served in the Army in Europe during World War II, I never heard any military commander - let alone the commander in chief - invite enemies to attack U.S. troops."

The American death toll in Iraq at that point was about 200, but it was clear that a vicious opposition was developing. Mr. Bush had no coherent strategy for defeating the insurgency then, and now - more than 1,500 additional deaths later - he still doesn't.

Peace.

www.missionnotaccomplished.us - How ever long it takes, the day must come when tens of millions of caring individuals peacefully but persistently defy the dictator, deny the corporatists their cash flow, and halt the evil being done in Iraq and in all the other places the Bu$h neoconster regime is destroying civilization and the environment in the name of "America."

225. June 30 2005: Veterans for Peace issue "Declaration of Impeachment"
VETERANS GROUP ISSUES “DECLARATION OF IMPEACHMENT”

AND ANNOUNCES PETITION TO REMOVE PRESIDENT BUSH

St. Louis – A national veterans’ organization today issued a “Declaration of Impeachment” and announced it is beginning an online petition to remove President Bush from office for crimes committed during the invasion and occupation of Iraq.

Using the same language as the original “Declaration of Independence,” Veterans For Peace cited many of the same reasons to remove George Bush that Thomas Jefferson cited to separate from King George of England. And in a modern version of the signing of the Declaration, VFP announced the posting of its online impeachment petition.

<clip>

Emphasizing the gravity with which Veterans for Peace takes the impeachment of George Bush, Cline concluded by quoting the final sentence of the Declaration of Independence: “And for the support of this Declaration…we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.”

To sign the online petition, or to read the “Declaration of Impeachment” and VFP’s documented case for removing George Bush, go to: http://www.veteransforpeace.org/impeachment/impeachment.htm

Veterans For Peace is a national organization founded in 1985, with 123 chapters across the country.
