What will keep a young man/woman from being drafted?
As a mother of 2 draft age sons, I sure would appreciate any information. There is an amazing amount of information on DU.

We are a patriotic family with a strong military background, but this war has nothing to do with patriotism. Thanks for any and all info.

9. Heh, I didn't know.
I just know about the gay soldier that was wounded in Iraq. Once they found he was gay, they booted him out of the service.

Make sure your kids let it be known to the military/recruiters that they are out and proud.

was a day late and a dollar short - he should have outed himself before he was wounded.

16. Homosexuality is a choice, isn't it?
That's what the radical right wing would have us believe.

6. That could get interesting

Since homosexuality now doesnt have the legal ramifications and social sanctions it did during the previous period of the draft, it may be a very convenient. popular, and common way to escape being drafted if the military continues its exclusionary policies.

Will they make people PROVE that they're homosexual ?

29. Have them start watching "Queer Eye".
Pay close attention to Carson. Also, my boyfriend and I will be happy to provide some tips. We'll outfit them with some beads, rings, ear-rings and a smart haircut so they can sashay in to the draft board.

24. Gay? Better have a plan B.
The current rules pre-date this administration.

If they're desparate enough to start a draft, they may change the anti-gay rule, too.

conscientious objectors. Do a search on DU and there is tons of info about the draft and how to hopefully avoid it. And you are a good mom for even considering it; indeed, this war has nothing to do with patriotism.

4. A serious medical problem, being gay, doing a lot of drugs.
Several felony convictions. Those are just the ones off the top of my head. It really depends on what the draft board establishes as the requirements. The ones I listed are the current disqualifiers in a volunteer Army.

27. How do you prove "doing lots of drugs?"
If you have a "dirty" drug test, does that count? What is a "dirty" drug test? Is that evidence of Marijuana in the urine? or something else?

31. They give recruits a drug test before sending them to boot camp.
But a little marijuana wont do it. They need to pop positive for something more serious like coke, meth, crank. Having an arrest record for those will also help. But again, it depends on what the draft board decides.

25. Selective Service has already contacted the Brethren
I would assume the Quakers have been notified as well.

Brethren Agree To Revive 'Alternative Service' Military Draft Programs

http://www.beliefnet.com/story/158/story_15893_1.html

Leaders of the Church of the Brethren say they will follow through on a request from the Selective Service to have "alternative service" programs in place for conscientious objectors if a draft is reinstated.

As one of the historic "peace churches" that shun military service, Brethren officials were "cautious" after an unannounced visit by a draft official to a church center in Maryland last October. Officials were worried that the visit signaled that a draft may be at hand. snip

In follow-up meetings, draft officials urged the church to dust off long-standing "alternative service" programs that allow conscientious objectors to serve in two-year domestic service projects in lieu of military service.

In a meeting Dec. 10, the church's council voted to "maximize our efforts" on alternative service, as well as help "guide our youth in their choice of nonviolent service." snip

Selective Service officials have insisted there are no plans to reinstate the draft, and said Alternative Service Director Cassandra Costley stopped by the Brethren Service Center simply because she was in the area. (Just stopped by because she was in the area? Riiiight!)

15. Stay Out Of Careers That The Military Needs
Be it a computer designer or majoring in a foreign language or any skill that can be applied to the war machine. There's already plans as to which groups of people will be called up first and it will be those with the greatest skills to step in and run all the whiz bang toys.

Of course money doesn't hurt either. Be assured, if there's a draft, there will be exemptions available from your friendly, local, cash-strapped Congresscritter...and those with the connections will surely find some way to either defer service or get some cushy desk job...far away from any real danger.

I have an 18 year old son and a 20 year old daughter. I'm very, very concerned about what's happening and looking at options as well.

I was in a similar situation during Vietnam...the war ended a year before I turned 18 (phew)...my plan was to enlist in AFRTS...the radio/TV service and be the Adrian Kronauer of some igloo in Alaska.

Good luck...I'll be watching with baded breath as well.

Pilonidal cyst - while it hasn't prevented him from being a competitive athlete - it may keep him from being drafted - HALLELUJAH - Thank you Rush - I hope you set precedence & will keep my son from being drafted.

Good luck AnotherMother4Peace, I'm working on documenting my, and my fiance's CO status. (who knows if it will work?) And we're looking into alternatives ... i.e. leaving the country.

Canada, after 9/11 supposedly signed some deal with the US where if there were to be a draft, they would return any dodgers to the US. I don't know if that is still the case, seeing as our relations with our northern friends have detirorated due to dumbya's persistent stupidness.

26. What about being over weight
I know that those who tried to get in the military in the earlier years had to lose weight to qualify. Check weight requirements. I'm sure many parents would rather have fat kids than dead ones, because you can always lose weight later, but you can't rise from the dead.

30. Tourette syndrome....
Just an idea, and if you can stand a potty mouth for a couple of years, you might encourage a little blue smoke in the room and coach your sons to let go. Perhaps a few drama courses might be helpful. I know first hand that foul language is prevalent in the military, but it tends to be a one way street and they could not tolerate such language being spouted from subordinates at inappropriate times. I know this dumb draftee would have tried it with what I know now. Shit, fuck, God damn!!!!
