1. Scary, isn't it? It even shows that there was one here
in Georgia just above Macon. I live in the Atlanta area and I didn't feel anything.

2. Maybe we'll have a perfect storm
A pretty white woman goes missing, and then is seen in a car, a huge televised police chase starts in LA, and then an earthquake occurs!

4. I get email notifications from this site whenever there is an earthquake
and this week has been very active. It doesn't hit our news unless it kills thousands or it affects us.

6. Very cool site ...
From the info on the rest of the site(http://neic.usgs.gov/neis/eqlists/eqstats.html) it seems that the seismic activity is "pretty much average" for what we'd expect ...
OR
God is telling Arnold and Zell Miller to go

8. Thanks
I probably got more notifications because of the after-quakes in California. It seems like there are always a lot in the region of the tsunami.

7. My theory is that..
Edited on Fri Jun-17-05 09:36 AM by SnoopDog
the polar caps are melting significantly. With the melting, the consolidation of ice, and therefore the weight of the ice, is being removed. With the weight of the ice no longer at the polls, the tectonic plates are seeking equilibrium. Therefore more and larger earthquakes.

Over millions of years (or hundreds of thousands of years), the polar caps have accumulated ice. The weight of the ice exerts a force and in those days I imagine many earthquakes happened as well. In recent times, things basically achieved a 'steady-state'. Not earthquake free obviously but a basic equilibrium of tectonic plate movement held in check by the polar caps. Now, that ice is melting, weight being reduced, - allows for more movement.

I picture it as a balloon (not a great analogy but it my might work): blow up a balloon. At the top and the bottom, with your hands, push down at the 'poles'. The middle gets pushed out. Now release your hands - the middle bulge moves back into position.

Edit:
Global Warming/Climate Change just doing its 'thing'.

but if thats true it shows we are way too late on global warming.

17. Maybe maybe not...
Mother Earth repairs herself - sometimes quickly.

But in general, I agree with you. Our climate is changing to be 'hotter'. The most precious resource on earth - water - is becoming contaminated and scarce.

We literally have to act *TODAY* to fix the problem.

Once again a theory:

Over eons, the carbon in the air was removed (to a point) and consolidated into coal and oil. (Hey, that is what coal and oil are!). Our earth likes that - especially this thing called LIFE. Plants and animals thrive in the air mixture.

Now, we are taking coal and oil and basically restoring the carbon back into the atmosphere. Since the 1800, and especially the 1900 to present, all we do is put the carbon back into the air thru power plant smoke stacks and billions on cars with there oil (gas) to carbon exhaust converters (engines).

So, our wonderful earth is reverting back to before the coal/oil equilibrium. And mother earth does not really care about that however, she makes an adjustment - LIFE is removed.

19. It doesn't make news unless large numbers of people we care about
are affected. But if there is an increase in earthquake activity that should be news even if populations are not directly affected. I think that we humans are having a huge irreversible effect on this planet- well it may be reversible, but not with us surviving the changes. We need a tremendous amount of energy to survive extremes of temperature.

20. Earthquakes do make news but nobody associates them with Global Warming...
Yes, this is only my therory...

But in general, mother Earth is giving us all the warning signs. Earthquakes, droughts, weird season start and end times, abnormal rain (yes, even rain in some instances can be a sign), unusual plant growth, and animal behaviors.

So what are we going to do? We are driving in a car. It slowly but steadily starts to make funny noises. The engine power seems to be inconsistent. The brakes make strange noises. It spurts and sputters. What do you do? Do you ignore it until such time you are in the middle of the desert with no city or service station within hundreds of miles and then say 'oh, I think there is something wrong with my car, and then try to fix it?"...

We better heed to mother earth's cry for help.

Also, your statement of 'needing tremendous amount of energy to survive extremes of temperature" may/is true. But the current means to create power is the very source of our demise. These coal plants are killing us.

I say to you, I could do without power if I had to, I could not live without water (and other life sustaining items ie. food).

Even if they help create the wars.

11. Do you have an image from a previous week?
I assume those big squares are pretty unusual. But are there normally a lot of little squares, or is the map usually almost empty?

16. I don't but I think the old data is probably on the site
There are always earthquakes of smaller magnitude but there were at least three major ones this week: Chile (6.0), California (7.2), Alaska (6.8)(all in the ocean) and I can't remember the last time that happened.
