Abstinence course hardly education
I vividly remember an abstinence-only assembly I attended as a student in the late 1990s. During this assembly the adults in charge asked student volunteers to hit pingpong balls through a large net as they gleefully exclaimed that the AIDS virus passes through condoms as easily as the little balls passed through the large holes in the net. Having already received comprehensive, accurate sex-education at my church, my conclusion at that moment was that the school administrators and the adults leading the assembly thought that I and my fellow students were ignorant and incapable of making our own decisions based on truth and reason. In that moment I quickly lost respect for those adults.
Instead of increasing funding for these types of programs we need to look at other options that address both the realities of the world, and the goals of education.
