1. I agree
while I hope we keep California (and keep Davis) I don't think losing the recall will necessarily mean California goes Bush. Look at the polls if nationally Bush is in the 40's then in California he must be worse off than that--it is overall a more liberal state than many.

You're right despite GOP governors in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New York in 2000--Al Gore won three of his highest margins in those states. Despite a Dem governor in SC and Ga--Bush won landslides.

5. You're missing something
State governors can raise a ton of money. If Arnold Schwarzenegger gets elected governor, he'll be able to raise tens of millions of dollars for Bush and the RNC. We've seen similar things happen in New York -- we have a (fairly) moderate Republican governor and a downright liberal Republican mayor of NYC, but they both raise tons of money for more conseravtive Republicans. And frankly, the Democratic Party in New York has suffered as a result of being shut out of these choice executive slots for the past dozen years. True, having Gray Davis as governor of California hasn't exectly helped Democrats -- but Democrats should always jump at the opportunity to lead, and if Arnold becomes governor of California, the Democrats won't be able to lead -- they'll only be able to obstruct. Either that or sit around hoping Arnold fails.

6. that's true but it doesn't mean Bush still has much of a chance in CA
in fact your example proves my point, Bush still didn't come close in NY.

8. On the Other Hand. . .
Hunter S. Thompson, who has been right plenty of times since 911, sees the CA circus this way:

<<I had a truly horrible dream last night about how I blundered into a fight between Mike Tyson and Arnold Schwarzenegger on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles. I was sitting next to Arnold (current betting favorite to be the next Governor of California) in the back seat of a black stretch-limozine. We were on our way to a TV studio for a debate about his long-time working friendship with the powerful Bush family from Texas and how it might affect the next Bush presidency when The Terminator seizes power in Sacramento and tries to hand over the state's 54 electoral votes by election day in 2004. That is the basic plan behind Schwarzenegger running. He doesn't want to be Governor, he just wants the electoral votes to go to Bush this time. >>

9. Then what about Massachussets, Hawaii and Rhode Island?
Are the Republican governors there going to give Bush their states?

He can try, but he won't succeed.

11. Thompson is right on the money again.....
...That's exactly how I've been calling this all along. Arnold can't do shit for the state of California. He's a BCE plant so they have control of the voting system for 2004.

Junior knows that Satan will open a ski resort in Hell before he will win California by any honest election. The Democracy-Terminator will "guarantee" him California, just like Jeb guaranteed him Florida and Diebold recently promised to guarantee Ohio.
