This week's Bill Moyers NOW - Church + State?, Daniel Pearl?, MORE...
http://www.pbs.org/now/thisweek/index.html

This week on NOW:

Around the nation faith-based organizations are getting taxpayer money to help Americans in trouble. Supporters point out that these groups have been successful in housing the homeless, educating children and caring for AIDS patients, the elderly, and the disabled Ñ often stepping in to help do a job that they say government social service agencies can't do alone. But critics contend that some of these faith-based programs are not only trying to help people with social services, but are also a vehicle to push religion on their vulnerable clients. NOW goes inside the faith-based initiatives debate with a look at Faith Partners, a Colorado church-based group that aims to help welfare families become self-sufficient.

On Wednesday, President Bush meets with President Pervez Musharraf of Pakistan, who the administration has called one of our closest allies in the war on terror. As Congress considers an $87 billion budget for reconstruction in Iraq Ñ a package that will include aid to Pakistan Ñ many wonder how much help Pakistan will be to US efforts in the Middle East. NOW's David Brancaccio talks to Bernard-Henri Levy, the esteemed French philosopher and accomplished author, who spent a great deal of time in Pakistan to research his most recent book, WHO KILLED DANIEL PEARL?

Bill Moyers interviews Peter G. Peterson, chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of NY, former secretary of commerce under President Nixon, and chairman and co-founder of the Blackstone Group, an international investing and advisory firm. As a Republican, Mr. Peterson has been critical of the current administration for what he calls "a Republican leadership in complete control of our national government, is advocating a huge and virtually endless policy of debt creation."

3. Talking about the dire straits of Social Security....
Why is it that the option of raising the thresh-hold of taxation never gets thrown out for discussion??

You're taxed for Social Security based on your income up to a certain salary figure. I can't remember what the cut off is but its sort of like this....If you make $70,000.00 per year you pay the same SS tax as someone who makes more money than you. In other words the wealthy don't pay as much into the system that they could or should.

4. Ah, yes, Daniel Pearl:
My father was a Jew
My mother was a Jew
I am a Jew

(and then they beheaded him)

Daniel Pearl was NO Zionist, so don't let I/P tell you anti-Zionism isn't the same as anti-Semitism!!

...go ahead, I/P haters, alert me...I know you can't take the truth!

25. Zionist are the radical right fascist party in jewish society.
Saying that you don't support the Zionists is not the same as saying that you hate all jews.

i hate republicans, it doesn't mean that i hate all americans.

9. I am watching the report on Faith Partners a "faith based" welfare
service in Colorado Springs. This family "adopted" a single mother of three children. At first they did not encourage her to attend church. Things changed when her three children went to church with the mentor family. The kids' mom attended a couple of times and has not attended church recently, she did comment that the mentor family was pushing the church issue more and more since she attended with them.

This makes me sick! These so called Christians are acting as vultures on people at their most vulnerable. Of course a single mom who has no other family is going to take to love bombing by a mentor family. Just making more right-wingers IMHO.

12. It's the old bait and switch scheme
"Nah, you don't have to come to our church. Just let us help you... "

Sometime later
"Say, have you heard about <pick your diety>?"
--

I have to wonder who is overseeing the application of this federal money, are we just taking the faith based organizations' word for it?

Oh, that was a dumb question...

14. maybe, just maybe
these "vultures" actually do love their fellow human beings, and genuinely want to help them? and perhaps their faith is so integral to who they are and what their conception of love is that they need to share their god with the people they help.

do they need government money to do it? no. but i sincerly doubt they're vultures.

18. did you watch the segment?
I would call them bait & switchers as opposed to vultures.

The technique was disgusting nevertheless.

First they infiltrated the government sponsered social service office available to people in need and proceeded to shunt the people seeking help into the faith-based program, which was offered as the only program that could truly help them.

Next, a psuedo-support group, ulterior motives in tact, flooded the client with flowers, birthday cakes and false goodwill.

Once the trust of the client had been secured, they then went beyond sharing their god to: pressuring people into participating in prayer circles, pressuring the client into attending their chosen church.

Then comes the most despicable thing. After attending the church a couple of times, the mother decided for some reason that it wasn't the church for her. The scene where her children were at the church with the faith-based counselor couple without her. They reassured the children that Mommy would come around, oh and did you meet some friends in the basement? The little girl nodded her head no.

Message: Don't worry honey, once you accept Jesus as your personal savior everything will be alrightedly-didetley.
They scare the shit out of me.
Thug tactics, pure & simple.

16. Ned Flanders kick
The faith-based segment was creepily-deepily for sure, that one guy was the evil Ned Flanders if I've ever seen one.

There will be a follow-up to that story in two weeks, I dread the further bad news.

Thanks Wonk!

20. I Just Watched the Tape
this was a great show, especially the second two interviews, Levy & Peterson.

Don't know if you caught it, but Levy said the hotel he was staying at - same one Daniel Pearl was before his kidnapping, was crawling with ISI.
