Armistead Maupin's dad has died
http://www.newsobserver.com/content/obits/index.html

A friend of mine was killed Saturday in a car wreck. I was looking for his obituary and I found an obituary for Armistead Jones Maupin, father of Armistead Maupin the writer.

Here's a snippet:

As a true conservative patriot, Armistead was always active in politics. In 1960 he served as Malcolm Sewell's campaign manager for governor and later chaired the Wake County Democratic Party. When the Democratic Party abandoned its southern conservative roots in 1976, Armistead became a loyal republican where he was active in Governor Ronald Regan's North Carolina primary campaign for President. He was a lifelong member of Christ Episcopal Church where he served on the vestry as a Senior Warden and as Vice-Chancellor of the Eastern Diocese of North Carolina.
A founding member of the Triangle Fox Hunt, he served as Field Master of the Hounds and Chairman of the Hunt Committee.
In 1982 he received a Presidential Appointment by President Regan to serve as Chairman of the American Battle Monument Commission.
He was a member of the North Carolina Society of the Cincinnati whose members are direct descendants of Revolutionary war officers who served under General George Washington. He served as President of the North Carolina Society and later served as President General of the General Society of the Cincinnati after being sworn in on the\n> battleship USS North Carolina.

1. I think Maulpin himself worked for Jesse Helms
as an intern/ speech writer. Now I see why that would have happened.

2. The DEM party " abandoned it's southern conservative roots...
in 1976"?!? This is in a *newspaper*? In the *obituary* section!?!

Don't people in NC know the difference between fact and opinion?

I know journalistic standards are getting lower all over but what's up with this?

4. Which, it's worth asking if Armistead Jr wrote that obit?
Or someone else in the family did.

I love AM, btw.

I honestly would have no clue. He was survived by a wife, another son, and some stepkids. So who knows who wrote it. At least the causes in lieu of flowers were good. SPCA and a hospice.

It's not poetic enough. I would expect one of the other kids did.

9. That would 'splain it. We call those "death notices" in NY.....
Obituaries are composed by the newspaper staff.
