I'm debating a FReep at work. He wants me to illustrate Bush is a liar
by having me identify Bush's BIGGEST lie so we can "discuss" it. He defines "lie" as a statement uttered with knowledge aforethought that the statement is untrue.

What would you say is Bush's biggest lie? It's got to be clear and blatant.

41. THIS IS A PROVEN LIE
When addressing the media regarding going back to the UN security council for authorization of force - or a second resolution (which is what Blair said he needed LEGALLY)

Bush stated emphatically, "YES - we will call for a vote - REGARDLESS OF THE WHIP COUNT".

The three leaders Aznar, Blair and Bush met on some small island for a strategy meeting - when it became apparent that they would not even get a majority of votes disregarding the veto threat by Chirac.

NO VOTE WAS CALLED. Bush lied when he stated he would call for a vote - regardless of the whip count.

America invaded shortly after.

12. *ahem*
26,000 liters of anthrax, 38,000 liters of botulinum toxin, 500 tons (which is 1,000,000 pounds) of sarin, mustard and VX nerve agent, 30,000 munitions to deliver the stuff, mobile biological weapons labs, and uranium from Niger for use in their robust nuclear weapons program.

This is verbatim from the Bush 2003 SOTU speech.

Contrast this with SecState Powell's comment from Feb 24 2001 press conference: "He has not developed any significant capability with respect to weapons of mass destruction. He is unable to project conventional power against his neighbors."

Multiple CIA analysts and reports cautioned against saying the stuff was definitely there.

The year before, Joe Wilson had personally debunked the uranium claim.

Oh, and PS, none of the stuff was there.

13. When he says...
We had to go to war because Saddam wouldn't let the inspectors in, when in fact, the inspectors were already in and we asked them to leave so we could start bombing.

He also said that he fought for and passed a patients bill of rights as Governor of Texas when he in fact vetoed that bill and the legislature passed it anyway without his signature. That one is a while ago, though.

Mostly what he does is deliberately mislead in everything he says. "Clear Skies Initiative" (pollute away), "Healthy Forests" (chop away), "if anyone committed a crime...".

24. Try this.

Early on in the run up to war the Administration claimed that Iraq and Al Qeada were linked and attempted to infer that Saddam was involved in the 9/11 attacks. That link was based on one very tenuous Czech intelligence report about a meeting between Mohammad Atta and Iraqi intelligence officers in the Czech Republic, a report that the Czech intelligence itself called doubtful.

On Meet the Press before the war Cheney says of Atta : "It has been pretty well confirmed that he (Atta) did go to Prague and he did meet with senior officers of Iraqi Intelligence."

The 911 commission, after reviewing all of the intelligence that the Administration used to form that link, reported that the meeting never took place, something that the Czech intelligence sources had reported earlier, and that there was no working relationship between Iraq and Al Qeada.

Later, on CNBC's Capitol Report, a reporter said to Cheney, "You have said in the past that it was, quote, pretty well confirmed . . . "

Cheney interrupted to say, "I never said that, absolutely not. I never said that."

The key to this is that the 911 commission reviewed the same intelligence that the White House had and came to the conclusion that BASED ON THE INTELLIGENCE THAT THE WHITE HOUSE HAD, THERE WAS NO CONNECTION BETWEEN IRAQ AND AL QEADA OR 9/11.

Yet, on May 1, 2003, only two months before the 911 commission publicly released it's report the President said, "The liberation of Iraq is a crucial advance in the campaign against terror. We have removed an ally of Al Qeada and cut off a source of funding."

If the intelligence that the White House had and which it provided to the 911 Commission showed no connection between Iraq and Al Qeada or the 9/11 attack would that not make the President's May first statement a lie?

Edited on Wed Jul-27-05 01:31 PM by fob
not to believe it anyway so you want to start with everyday lies (especially the ones where there is NO NEED to lie) so that the freep will develop the understanding of that fucker*s true nature.

here are some everyday lies;

bush* says he barely knows ken lay
he* can't think of a mistake he*s made
he*ll take care of anyone INVOLVED in leaking CIA Ops name, then he says only if the leaker COMMITTED a crime
He*ll hunt OBL

edit: "Mission Accomplished" and "Major combat operations in Iraq have ended"
/edit

there are so many instances

Find the 9/13/01 comment from bush* regarding OBL and his* 3/13/02 follow up where he* says he*s not really concerned about OBL anymore

There's the whole 2002 SOTU address (pinning 9/11 on saddam) then the clip that Randi Rhodes plays of bush* saying "We have no evidence that saddam was involved with 9/11"

There's the promise of funds to NY that was reneged.

There was his Jan 2001 proclamation that he* expected his* admin to avoid "even the APPEARANCE of impropriety" versus his* current rally around rove.

You also need to make sure the freep understands the lies of bush* that are spoken through his surrogates, cheney, rice, rummy, fleischer, McClellan, et al. So the freep doesn't apply the "well HE* didn't SAY those words so HE* didn't technically lie".

56. A suggestion: Start with lies that would offend a right winger's
deepest ideals, such as lies about the budget/deficit, national security, immigration, etc. Show how Bush betrays even the most touted conservative ideals. Don't try challenging his entire ideological identity, at first. Establish whatever common ground you can establish, then challenge his belief system if he appears receptive to such challenges.

The Bush administration's incompetence in national security prior to 9/11 would probably be a good place to start.

63. If you must debate the clueless --
My offering:

7/14/03 -- Bush utters:

"The larger point is, and the fundamental question is, did Saddam Hussein have a weapons program? And the answer is, absolutely. 1) And we gave him a chance to allow the inspectors in, and he wouldn't let them in. 2) And, therefore, after a reasonable request, we decided to remove him from power, along with other nations, so as to make sure he was not a threat to the United States and our friends and allies in the region. I firmly believe the decisions we made will make America more secure and the world more peaceful."

1) The actual circumstances were that the UN inspectors were in Iraq and the Iraqi government was providing unfettered access to UN weapons inspectors. UN inspectors were busy dismantling Iraqi missiles when they were instructed to leave Iraq, prior to the US - UK invasion. (And I might add, there was wall-to-wall cable news coverage of the inspectors physically on the ground in Iraq).

http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article4110.htm

2) March 2002, Bush utters: "F___ Saddam. we're taking him out." Those were the words of President George W. Bush, who had poked his head into the office of National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice." In July 2003 Bush then claims he gave Hussein a reasonable chance and then had no choice but to go to war, knowing full well, and having declared in front of witnesses in 2002, that "we" were taking Saddam out.

as reasons for the Iraq War were correct. I knew when he said most of them that they were not true but did George know, I don't know. But either way if he didn't than he failed in his responsibility to the American people to know what is going on and to speak accurately or if he did know that nothing was true he is guilty of high crimes possibly treason. Ultimately he is responsible for everything that comes out of the White House. For what ever reasons we are sinking in Iraq he is responsible and should step down immediately.

69. I think the most blatant lie, the one with NO wiggle room
Is, on Sept 7th he told a group of reporters in a joint press conference with Tony Blair. I would remind you when the inspectors were in Iraq, when they were finally denied access an IAEA report came out saying they were six months away from a (nuclear) weapon. The IAEA said not only that no such report exists but that their actual position in 98 (when the inspectors were finally denied access) was that they had destroyed Iraq's nuclear capabilities in 91 and they saw no evidence that Iraq had revived their nuclear capacities. See this is blatant, he pulled a non existent report directly out of his ass. This is NOT a mistake of intelligence nor a misinterpretation. THERE WAS NO SUCH REPORT. When called on it he said he meant a 91 report, besides the fact he didn't say 98 which might have been a slip of the tongue but when the inspectors were finally denied access, AND the fact that 91 was totally irrelevant to the issue at hand, the IAEA said they had no such report in 91 either. The next excuse was he meant a series of London times articles. First confusing a newspaper article for a definitive report on the issue THEY are tasked with is like mistaking the info from a bazooka joe bubblegum comic with an encyclopedia reference. Second the LT made no such claim rather said they were six months away from enriching uranium. When called on this what did the administration do? If you guessed another lie you see where this is going. The white house then said he mean an IISS article. First mistaking the IISS with the IAEA is like mistaking your high school drama award with an Oscar, Second that report came out two days AFTER he made his assertion, the one that began "I would remind you" Third, they made no such claim either. They said IF Saddam obtained enriched uranium he could have a nuclear device in six months (the IAEA disputed this) since enriched uranium is the sine qua non of nuclear weapons this is like saying IF you give me the money I could buy a Ferrari. No way out of this one, dead on lie.

79. Right, he said the same damn thing in the first debate with Al Gore--
New question. How would you go about as president deciding when it was in the national interest to use U.S. force generally?

BUSH:

It's in our vital national interest, and that means whether a territory is threatened or people could be harmed, whether or not the alliances are -- our defense alliances are threatened, whether or not the friends in the Middle East are threatened. That would be a time to seriously consider the use of force. Secondly, whether or not the mission was clear. Whether or not it was clear understanding as to what the mission would be. Thirdly, whether or not we were prepared and trained to win, whether or not our forces were of high morale and high standing and well-equipped. And finally, whether or not there was an exit strategy.
http://www.australianpolitics.com/news/2000/00-10-03.shtml

Whether or not the mission was clear . . . oh, brother. And whether or not there was an exit strategy.

We have an exit strategy in Iraq--lose enough soldiers and money that we finally give up and come home.

Worst. President. Ever.

My favorite....

"Something meant to deceive or give a wrong impression."

By repeating the Iraq/9-11 mantra, he knowingly leaves the wrong impression. How does he know? Because as recently as February of this year, a poll showed that 42% of Americans believed that most of the 9-11 hijackers were Iraqis.

My case is closed.

Contrary to Bush's claim, however, the 1998 IAEA report did not say that Iraq was six months away from developing nuclear capability, NBC News' Robert Windrem reported Saturday.

Instead, Windrem reported, the Vienna, Austria-based agency said in 1998 that Iraq had been six to 24 months away from such capability before the 1991 Persian Gulf War and the U.N.-monitored weapons inspections that followed.

Like mentioned above, get him to agree about what a 'lie' is. I like the one where President AWOL says "I read the report" (EPA), but he did not read the report and he undoubtedly knows he did not read the report.

Also, get him to say clearly that it matters to him if Shrub lies and deceives, or not. If he agrees that you have made your case, but then goes on to "but no big deal, all presidents do that blahblah" or "it was only a little lie, or an old lie blahblah", then why waste the time?

Here's one of my fave clips, from October 2002!

For Bush, Facts Are Malleable
Presidential Tradition Of Embroidering Key Assertions Continues

By Dana Milbank
Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, October 22, 2002; Page A01

President Bush, speaking to the nation this month about the need to challenge Saddam Hussein, warned that Iraq has a growing fleet of unmanned aircraft that could be used "for missions targeting the United States."

Last month, asked if there were new and conclusive evidence of Hussein's nuclear weapons capabilities, Bush cited a report by the International Atomic Energy Agency saying the Iraqis were "six months away from developing a weapon." And last week, the president said objections by a labor union to having customs officials wear radiation detectors has the potential to delay the policy "for a long period of time."

All three assertions were powerful arguments for the actions Bush sought. And all three statements were dubious, if not wrong. Further information revealed that the aircraft lack the range to reach the United States; there was no such report by the IAEA; and the customs dispute over the detectors was resolved long ago.

...

"Everybody makes mistakes when they open their mouths and we forgive them," Brookings Institution scholar Stephen Hess said. Some of Bush's overstatements appear to be off-the-cuff mistakes. But, Hess said, "what worries me about some of these is they appear to be with foresight. This is about public policy in its grandest sense, about potential wars and who is our enemy, and a president has a special obligation to getting it right."

89. Found these on a blog site:
President Bush in December 2001 explaining publicly how he learned about the terrorist attacks three months before: "I was in Florida. And ... I was sitting outside classroom waiting to go in, and I saw an airplane hit the tower - the TV was obviously on, and I used to fly myself, and I said, 'There's one terrible pilot.'"

This account is obviously false since network cameras were not trained on the towers at the time the first airliner hit; it was only later that amateur video of this event was broadcast. It has also been repeatedly documented that he was not OUTSIDE the classroom, but INSIDE it, listening to the teacher read 'My Pet Goat'.

Another

The president also said to the father of twins, "I've been to war. I've raised twins. If I had a choice, I'd rather go to war." Mr. Bush was a member of the Texas Air National Guard between 1968 and 1973 and never left the country in pursuit of his duties.

Lets not leave out bush's pals

"I don't believe anyone that I know in the administration ever said that Iraq had nuclear weapons."
—Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, at a hearing of the Senate's appropriations subcommittee on defense, May 14, 2003

"We believe he has, in fact, reconstituted nuclear weapons."
—Vice President Dick Cheney on NBC's Meet the Press, March 16, 2003

"...the intelligence." He said this, knowing full well that the CIA had tried to take out references to the nuclear program, and that there were numerous qualifications and disputes about virtually every WMD claim. There were constant and substantitive criticisms of the bogus claims they touted as truth, and even if they were just pathologically hell-bent that they were right despite endless disputes, the disputes were more than just "inklings".

This is a classic "big lie". They had so many disputes coming back from the spooks that they had to create their own unit in the Pentagon to properly skew the information.

92. Here are specific lies
“We found the weapons of mass destruction.”
-GW Bush, May 2003

In 2001, Dick Cheney said it was “confirmed that (Mohammed Atta) did meet with a senior official of the Iraqi intelligence service in Czechoslovakia last April, several months before the attack."

Then, in 2004, Cheney was forced to say: "I have not suggested there's a connection between Iraq and 9/11."

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,134636,00.html

In justifying the invasion of Iraq, Bush said he was “acting … to take the necessary actions against international terrorists and terrorist organizations, including those nations, organizations, or persons who planned, authorized, committed, or aided the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001.” – George Bush

http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2003/03/20030319-1.html

"Now we will have struck a major blow right at the heart of the base, if you will, the geographic base of the terrorists who have had us under assault now for many years, but most especially on 9/11." Vice President Cheney, 9/14/03
