"Papers Show Record Spending in Calif. Vote"
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - November's special election is shaping up as perhaps the costliest ever in California, campaign financial statements filed Monday show.

The nation's biggest pharmaceutical companies contributed more than $37 million to the race during the first half of 2005. They hope to defeat a measure requiring prescription drug discounts, and hope to pass a measure calling for a voluntary discount program.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, working in support of three ballot measures, brought in more than $8 million but spent $11 million, leaving him in the red for the first half of the year.

And a coalition of the state's largest public employee unions reported contributions of nearly $10 million, much of it already spent on ads criticizing Schwarzenegger's fall agenda.
