9. Here is what she is referring to:
FEMA Chief Waited Until After Storm Hit

WASHINGTON Sep 6, 2005 — The government's disaster chief waited until hours after Hurricane Katrina had already struck the Gulf Coast before asking his boss to dispatch 1,000 Homeland Security employees to the region and gave them two days to arrive, according to internal documents.

Michael Brown, director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, sought the approval from Homeland Security Secretary Mike Chertoff roughly five hours after Katrina made landfall on Aug. 29. Brown said that among duties of these employees was to "convey a positive image" about the government's response for victims.

Before then, FEMA had positioned smaller rescue and communications teams across the Gulf Coast. But officials acknowledged Tuesday the first department-wide appeal for help came only as the storm raged.

Brown's memo to Chertoff described Katrina as "this near catastrophic event" but otherwise lacked any urgent language. The memo politely ended, "Thank you for your consideration in helping us to meet our responsibilities."

14. Why leak damaging information when all you have to do is listen
to this idiot for 30 seconds?

No, I don't put anything past the administration, but it's not as though they need to damage his credibility any further. I don't believe there's anyone in the nation who doesn't think he's a hopeless buffoon, and most of the nation never had heard of him until about Thursday of last week.

15. Seems like their plan, if this is so. These guys are very good
at going after the weakest one and stabbing him in the back. Scapegoats are always needed and one of them will do when an outsider isn't available.

Now that they are in control of everything, they don't have any Democrats to blame when things go wrong.

Since Chimpy is supposedly a sports fan, maybe this holds.

21. No need to go ad hominem. Bush 'outsourced' FEMA's hurricane planning and
evacuation response to Innovative Emergency Management, Inc., a.k.a. IEM. See website www.ieminc.com and look up the Southeastern Louisiana New Orleans Disaster Plan

IEM Team to Develop Catastrophic Hurricane Disaster Plan for New Orleans & Southeast Louisiana
June 3, 2004
http://www.ieminc.com/Whats_New/Press_Releases/pressrelease060304_Catastrophic.htm

"The IEM team will complete a functional exercise on a catastrophic hurricane strike in Southeast Louisiana and use results to develop a response and recovery plan. A catastrophic event is one that can overwhelm State, local and private capabilities so quickly that communities could be devastated without Federal assistance and multi-agency planning and preparedness."

So, when New Orleans was hit by the Cat 5 levee-breaking Hurrican Katrina, and the FEMA plan paid for with $500K of taxpayer's dollars was supposed to kick into effect...nothing happened. The state and local officials are now being blamed despite being obviously 'overwhelmed' as the Plan describes.

The Disaster Plan is a clear example of typical neoconservative dogmatic outsourcing and privatization AT ALL COSTS. Why, outsourcing has already destroyed so many US jobs in manufacturing and now in 'back office' and IT, it is now literally killing US citizens !

Republicans and their enabler Democratic camp followers will need to investigate this, and soon. Hurricane season has two more months to go.

33. It's Bush's outsourcing and privatization policies that are killers
Government Saw Flood Risk but Not Levee Failure
By SCOTT SHANE and ERIC LIPTON
Published: September 2, 2005

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/09/02/national/nationalspecial/02response.html

NYTimes article shows that up until the levee breaks, city officials had evacuated residents as planned to shelters. When the levees broke and flooded the city, FEMA was supposed to 'kick in' with the IEM, Inc. 'catastrophic' hurricane plan as mentioned in my earlier post. This didn't happen. It took days therefore for FEMA to eventually get its act together and get buses into New Orleans. When they DID, they contracted out to out-of-state bus charter companies rather than collect buses from all over non-affected areas of Louisiana.

No need to do 'ad hominem' attacks on Republicans at all. Their policies are deadly enough. Outsourcing is a job-killer. Things just went too far policy-wise and this is the result.

25. I think Brown was following orders, and if they hang him out
to twist in the wind, he may suddenly become a Dylan Thomas fan, and "go not quiet into that good night, but rage, rage against the dying of the light."

Which is to say, he may just spill some beans on his way out the door. Wonder if he'll get a Medal of Freedom out of it like Tenet did.
