IndianaGreen started a thread about the horrible new Republican legislation that will make marriage a requirement for motherhood in the state of Indiana, including specific criminal penalties for unmarried women who do become pregnant "by means other than sexual intercourse."

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x4963321

Well, this was horrible news to me! How dare these folks try to tell us that we have to be married - to a man, of course - before we could get artifical insemination if we wanted to become pregnant? The post drew outrage and anger. This affects unmarried straight women and lesbians who may want to have children without the husband, thank you very much. Yes - lots of outrage.

So, where is the ACTION?? I understand that there is a lot going on but the threads about this drew some great, impassioned responses. We need to go one step further and DO SOMETHING.

I've sent this to NOW and PFLAG as well as a few other organizations that might be able to help out. It didn't take that long and it's the least that I can do to help preserve a woman's right to be a mother if she damned well wants to be one. IndianaGreen has been helping get the word out as well.

But - that is it. 2 folks. We aren't going to turn the tide if we only have 2 people getting the word out.

Please - turn that passion, outrage and anger into something! Send an email to someone who can help! Send it to the media, your friends, GLBT organizations, women's organizations, Barney Frank - just please help get this nasty legislation out into the light of day so we can kill it!!

Thank you. I apologize for cussing.

Arnie

8. It will backfire only if we get this out in the open
As soon as reasonable people hear about this, it will die a well-deserved death.

If we don't speak up, however, they will sneak this through. Then it will pop up in other states as well.

The outcome of this can go our way if we work hard to inform the public. We just have to do something besides say how bad it is.

I love the state but I can't live there. Of course, NC isn't much better thanks to Helms and now Dole and Burr.

14. I have
come back, that is. I split time among two pretty liberal communities in the state - and it is absolutely surreal - I don't talk to anyone who supports this reactionary cr*p. But B-ton and urban Indy are not representative of this state.

17. This legislation is insane. Parts of this country seem to be headed...
straight back to the dark ages. Between denying women's rights and 'intelligent design' we might as well be in the days of "The Scarlet Letter". Will being put in stocks in the public square be next.

used by heterosexual couples? Commonly used in this very Republican area in which I live.

19. Let me clarify the legislation...
This legislation will not ban fertility treatments. It will make it necessary for women to be married in order to obtain fertility treatments 'legally'. In addition, they plan to criminally prosecute unmarried women who get pregnant without sexual intercourse (defined as penis-ejaculating-in-vagina.)

20. Exactly - as long as the woman is MARRIED TO A MAN
Then she can go ahead and try to become pregnant by artifical means.

Unmarried woman - forget it.
Lesbian woman - forget it.

Married woman - you are in luck, my friend.

This is pathetic. IN theory, a lesbian could marry a man and try it but if you notice the other clauses in there, they look at more than just whether or not you're married - like do you go to church?
