20. Interesting...
I lived in CT in the 70's and 80's and thought that the only Repub with any redeeming value whatsoever was Lowell Weicker. So much so that in 1988, I voted for the first and only time for a Repub over Lieberman, who I was not impressed with even at that early stage in his career. It seems first impressions are more accurate than we believe they are. As far as I'm concerned, I don't like any Republican out there, and that includes my two Repub Senators and Congresswoman from Virginia, where I now live.

35. Chafee has threatened before of switching over, I think that if the Dems
win the Senate or get close, he and maybe the other three may switch over. I think that Chafee is the most likely. This is, of course, assuming he wins in 06. If he loses the primaries though(which are far more conservative than the primary elections), I bet it's a given the Dems will pick that seat up.

14. Nationally, no.
Here in Minnesota, there's still a few "old school" Republicans around who are basically Democrats these days. Arne Carlson, who was our governor for 8 years, had his share of faults (his undying support for school vouchers being one of them) was also pretty liberal when it came to many issues and acknowledged the need for taxes in this high-service, high quality-of-life state.

18. Los Angeles District Attorney, Steve Coolly...
...whom I'd voted for.

He's not any high-profile Republican, and he kept his campaign promise that he's a police officer first, and politician second.

I voted for him after Gil Garcetti <sp?> f***ed up the O.J. Simpson case, and was known to be pretty corrupt.

Steve Coolly has yet to disappoint me.

But he's the ONLY Republican I (so far) haven't begun to dislike.

21. Yes, some friends and family
when we speak of everthing else except politics.

They are bemused that I will not shop at Walmart etc. and confused when I model so-called "Christian" behaviors - ex. generosity to the have-nots - while they do not - yet they attend church and I do not.

I am secure in my beliefs and practices, while they seem otherwise.

We still love each other, yet I hope they are thinking about their values as they see that someone completely different from their political beliefs is truly "compassionate", funny, and succeeding in life despite not supporting Bushco.

I hope Mr. McCain lies awake in bed this weekend and thinks hard about the fact that the only people that 'support torture' come from his own damn party...

McCain had a chance to beat Gonzalez up about his part in advocating torture of prisoners during his nomination to AG, and he didn't do it... He lost my respect then.

38. I quite like David Frum
I've even read his book! He's always pretty reasonable & doesn't get shouty (like most republicans I see) and I've known him voice some independent opinions.

Also -- despite the fact that he is quite, quite insane -- I've got a soft spot for Richard Perle. During the Iraq war run up, he was on British TV almost every night (until he decided that the BBC were against him) losing argument after argument, making wilder statements the more backed into a corner he got.

Oh and PJ O'Rourke.

My husband says I actually blanch and take a few steps backward when I meet a Republican. But I have a confession and hope I won't be kicked off after the truth comes out - I voted for Eisenhower my first time out, and - shame, shame - voted for Nixon instead of Kennedy. I've often wondered if I'd stayed in the Texas Panhandle would I have come to my senses?

54. Everett Dirksen had pluses and minuses
He was a big, big supporter of the Civil Rights legislation and open housing laws of the '60s and helped get them passed.

But he was also a big fan of Lyndon Johnson's Vietnam War escalation and he also tried to introduce prayer into the public schools.

He was fairly low key overall in his partisanship and was an old-time Republican. I'd take him any day over the current crop of turds in the Republican Party.
