Help me find a great Barney Frank wisecrack!
I saw it here on DU. The subject was (I think!) John Roberts' sexual orientation. Someone was discounting rumors of his possible gaiety with a statement something to the effect that "Nonsense, John Roberts is a moderate." (Moderate is not the word, but I can't for the life of me remember the right word.) To which Barney Frank is alleged to have responded:
"I have no doubt of that. And, by the way, I plan to spend some time in a Moderate Bar this evening."
It's perfectly possible that I have all this completely wrong...but it was a great gag and I'd love to repeat it. Anybody have any idea what I might be talking about?

1. Help me here.
I missed this whole thing. I have heard Randi say things about Robert's being gay, but where is this coming from. Is this because his children are adopted? I would appreciate someone educating me on this. Thanks.

3. Bill Maher showed a photo of a young Roberts (college age) and
two other young men posing with a pie. It set off a lot of gaydar around here...Maher's comment was "real men don't pose with food.!" Then, of course people brought up his late marriage (45) two adopted kids etc. I don't indulge in gay bashing and the whole thing (gaydar or not) strikes me as a bit silly...if anything, the thought that Roberts might be gay humanizes him for me and makes me hope he'll be more sympathetic to the whole idea of personal freedoms and civil rights. ....but Barney Frank's gag was very funny and I wish I could remember it accurately.

4. it was about David Dreier.
Edited on Sat Oct-08-05 08:07 PM by Lexingtonian
They asked Barney Frank about Dreier not getting the Majority Leader job after DeLay resigned and wanted him to take it.

They asked him whether the reason was Dreier was too moderate or he was gay.
The reply was something like "He didn't get it because he was moderate. And I'm going to a moderate bar after work."

You can find the exact quote in archived GD or via Google.

On edit: the Roberts thing is Bill Maher's quote on a photo of Roberts- "Straight men don't pose with pastry."

6. THANK YOU!
I managed to superimpose a Bill Maher gag on a Barney Frank gag.

rejected by right wing congress members (allegedly in part because of rumors that Dreier is gay).

8. My all time favorite Barney line
Was when Dickless Armey called him "Barney F*g". After the ensuing uproar, Armey tried to explain it away by saying it was an accident, a "slip of the tongue."

A couple of days later, reporters were asking Barney what he thought of Armey's excuse. Barney replied, "Well in seventy-seven years, my mother has never once accidentally been called "Sylvia F*g"
