Focus of CIA Leak Probe
Appears to Widen

By JOHN D. MCKINNON, JOE HAGAN and ANNE MARIE SQUEO
Staff Reporters of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL
October 12, 2005; Page A3

The New York Times reporter who went to jail to avoid testifying in the CIA leak case was quizzed by the special prosecutor again yesterday and has agreed to return to the grand jury today.

Judith Miller's additional testimony comes as the endgame is intensifying in the legal chess match that threatens to damage the Bush administration.

There are signs that prosecutors now are looking into contacts between administration officials and journalists that took place much earlier than previously thought. Earlier conversations are potentially significant, because that suggests the special prosecutor leading the investigation is exploring whether there was an effort within the administration at an early stage to develop and disseminate confidential information to the press that could undercut former Ambassador Joseph Wilson and his wife, Central Intelligence Agency official Valerie Plame.

Mr. Wilson had become a thorn in the Bush administration's side, as he sought to undermine the administration's claims that Iraq had sought to buy materials for building nuclear weapons from other countries, such as uranium "yellowcake" from Niger. Ultimately, his wife's name and identity were disclosed in a newspaper column, prompting the investigation into whether someone in the administration broke the law by revealing the identity of an undercover agent.

Ms. Miller, the Times reporter, was interviewed again yesterday to discuss conversations she had with I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, the vice president's chief of staff. She testified on Sept. 30 before a grand jury about conversations she had with Mr. Libby in July 2003.

4. There's DU speculation that the leak had little to do with Joe...
...and everything to do with blowing Valerie out of the water before her CIA unit could uncover major dirt on the Bush** Crime Family.

NGU.

7. Yep and that's why I call it Traitorgate.
Send a threat to other midlevel personnel who might speak up.
Payback Wilson.
Cover up the lie about WMD's.
DELIBERATELY BLOW UP THE CIA OPERATION that has detailed history on Pakistani and Israeli nuclear dealings.

It is the last one that has yet to receive substantial notice.

5. The interesting point in the story
Edited on Wed Oct-12-05 08:19 AM by ewagner
is that Fitzgerald seems to be looking at the White House Iraq Group . This has potential for involving (if not idicting) some of the most major players in this administration: Libby, Rove, Rice, Matelin, Hughes, Hadley and (the big enchilada)CHENEY!!!

This is getting exciting!

on edit and respond to Classwarrior: I hope the speculation is correct and maybe the WHIG is a start.

I hate that fucking paper. They should all burn in HELL!!! :)

1. Wilson was ASKED to ascertain the authenticity of the documents on which the claims were based.

2. The documents we forgeries. Very amateurish forgeries at that. Wilson reported back this conclusion.

3. When Bush/Cheney/Powell continued to LIE about the Iraq nuke claims (manipulating the US congress and public, and endangering nat'l security), Wilson did an end-run around them, primarily via a NYT Op-Ed.

13. WSJ news reporters are excellent -- it is the editorial wingnuts
like John Fund who are the problem. News has done some excellent reporting on Plame and NOLA FEMA scandal. None of it complementary to Bush admin.

IMHO.

15. business people want real news -- the wingnuttery gets ignored
at least that has been my impression of people I know who read the WSJ -- granted that is a pretty small sample.

8. Wilson wasn't a thorn in the bush administration's side.........
he was an honest man reporting what he knew to be true. The thorn is the dishonest and probably illegal actions taken by Libby and Rove (god knows WHO else) in retaliation for Wilson's honesty. This is a self inflicted wound, not something that Joe Wilson inflicted upon them. Their own dishonesty, vengefulness and spite are the thorn on which they impaled themselves.
