Reality Check: Arctic Drilling And Sen. Coleman

Pat Kessler
Reporting

(WCCO) Rising gas prices because of Hurricane Katrina could mean opening the Arctic Refuge for oil drilling and it could also mean a tough decision for Minnesota Senator Norm Coleman.

It's only a few words in a 2,500 page, $2.5 trillion spending bill that includes money for hurricane relief and the war in Iraq, but it gives oil companies permission to drill for oil in Alaska's Arctic Wildlife Refuge.

Coleman is now face-to-face with a promise he made to oppose drilling in that area.

"Folks don't want me to be a prawn of the president," said Coleman in October 2002 when he was campaigning for Senate. "I disagree with him on trade with Cuba, I disagree with him about drilling in Alaska, I don't think we should."

3. What are the chances he'll keep his promises?
From the article:
Coleman promised to oppose Alaska oil drilling during his 2002 U.S. Senate campaign against the late Paul Wellstone.

Wellstone did not believe Coleman's promise and ran television ads questioning Coleman's commitment.

"For drilling in the Alaska wilderness, then against it," the ad said. "Now he's for drilling. Can we trust Norm Coleman?"

IN FACT, Coleman did vote twice against oil drilling in the Arctic and said he still opposes it.

But, it's inside the overall budget bill that includes important spending programs for Minnesota farmers and Medicaid recipients, so Coleman might vote "yes".

4. Norm is a friggin' tool. He is an embarrassment to the state of MN.
He needs to go.

Back in law school, his fellow students referred to him as "Norm Coleperson." Bwahahaha! They spotted his smarminess a mile away. I can't wait until he is voted out.
