Mo Dowd: Woman of Mass Destruction (blasts Miller; free link to full text)

October 22, 2005
Op-Ed Columnist
Woman of Mass Destruction
By MAUREEN DOWD

<snip>

Judy admitted in the story that she "got it totally wrong" about W.M.D. "If your sources are wrong," she said, "you are wrong." But investigative reporting is not stenography.

The Times's story and Judy's own first-person account had the unfortunate effect of raising more questions. As Bill said yesterday in an e-mail note to the staff, Judy seemed to have "misled" the Washington bureau chief, Phil Taubman, about the extent of her involvement in the Valerie Plame leak case.

<snip>

Judy refused to answer a lot of questions put to her by Times reporters, or show the notes that she shared with the grand jury. I admire Arthur Sulzberger Jr. and Bill Keller for aggressively backing reporters in the cross hairs of a prosecutor. But before turning Judy's case into a First Amendment battle, they should have nailed her to a chair and extracted the entire story of her escapade.

Judy told The Times that she plans to write a book and intends to return to the newsroom, hoping to cover "the same thing I've always covered - threats to our country." If that were to happen, the institution most in danger would be the newspaper in your hands.

6. That's a terribly
sexist comment. This is a well reasoned column by someone who has known Miller for over 20 years.

8. I didn't like that term "catfight" either, but no reason to stop reading
that unfortunate and demeaning term came from the person who posted it, not Mo Dowd.

However, I am thankful that HE posted it, as now I don't have to lurk in my supermarket to read it from a stack of NYTs for sale.

I recommend you go back and read the article. You can post a comment re: the "catfight" term below.

3. "the same thing I've always covered - threats to our country."
If she were really doing that, she wouldn't have gone to jail. Well, maybe Guantanamo.....

7. Does Dowd know something we don't?
All references to Miller oin the article are in the past tense, "Judy did", "she was", implying that Miller's forced absence from the pages of the NYT is in fact permanent. Is this wishful thinking on my part? In any event she won't be able to do much journamalism once she is imprsioned after a perjury conviction, will she?

9. somehow, I think it could have been a tougher criticism of
her, with the implication that she was a "mole" for WHIG... but the last sentence was great.

11. What Judy Miller covers is 'threats to our country' according to...
Chalabi, Rove, Cheney, Libby et al. I hardly call that investigative journalism.

12. Miller the martyr is a menace for passing on self serving neoconner
propaganda about the war from her whig sources- who could then turn around and cite the "lefty" NYT as confirming the WMD scare- as though the NYT independently came to the same conclusion about the WMD's.

The biggest surprise here is that this all goes so deep and the nation is just OK with it.

The other shocker- why does martyr girl stil have a job at the NYT? Jason Blair her.
